Poor Manny

Man, can Manny Legace ever catch a break? The Detroit Red Wings goaltender was injured last night in a 4-1 win over Chicago. Legace was run over by Matthew Barnaby and sprained his knee. It's a very tough break for the league's most unlikely wins leader.

For most of his career, Manny Legace has been known as a super backup goaltender, one that can spell the starter and give his team a solid performance every time out. When Detroit released Chris Osgood in 2001, Legace thought maybe he would get his chance. But no, they brought in Dominick Hasek, who subsequently won them a cup. Suddenly though, Hasek retired and Legace was once again licking his chops- that was until GM Kenny Holland signed Curtis Joseph.

Throw into the mix a returning Hasek, and Legace was suddenly the third string goaltender. Injuries to both Joseph and Hasek did allow the veteran to get some playing time, but the whole situation was a mess.

Fast forward to 2005-2006, a new beginning without Hasek and Joseph right? Wrong. Detroit signs Chris Osgood and Legace is expected to share the load once more. But, a groin injury sidelines Joseph for the first month of the season and Legace goes on to set a record for most wins by a goaltender in October. It's a all gravy now, a new chapter in his life: as the star goaltender.

Well that all might have ended Tuesday night. Osgood is back off injury and Legace gets hurt. Osgood gets the win in relief- his second of the season- and Legace has to undergo an MRI. Where's the luck, where's the fortune? It just doesn't seem fair.
