The Ovechkin and Crosby Show
by Robby Maddux
Washington's and rival Pittsburgh's dueling superstars - Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby - have crushed this Eastern Conference semi-final's expectations and then some.
Before the puck dropped to begin the best-of-seven series, online NHL betting fans anticipated one of the most star-studded postseason matchups in recent history. But what they've gotten, thus far, couldn't have been better if scripted for a movie.
Ovechkin and Crosby treated NHL wagering enthusiast to a historic night on Monday in Game 2. The league's and series two biggest stars—rivals who don’t like each other—had a jaw-dropping head-to-head performance, as both recorded hat tricks in the same meeting. Ovechkin recorded his first playoff hat trick, then just minutes later, Crosby notched his first postseason hat trick.
“Sick game. Sick three goals by me and Crosby,” said Ovechkin, who celebrated by bouncing his body high off the glass after both of his third-period goals. Crosby said, “It’s nice to score, but it’s better to win.''
Even as good as the NHL’s elite stars are it's a feat likely never to be repeated. But as the series rolls on, and Ovechkin and Crosby continue their can-you-top-this showcase, you can only expect the unexpected from the battling duo.
Despite the heroics of Crosby, a major storyline has been the lack of a supporting cast for Pittsburgh. The Heart Trophy nominee, Evgeni Malkin, has been a ghost in this series. After lighting it up in the first round, the Russian sniper has yet to find that same touch against the Capitals and it makes you wonder if he himself is guilty of becoming a spectator in the Ovechkin vs. Crosby show.
If Pittsburgh is going to dig itself out of the 2-0 hole they’re in, it will take a team effort. If Washington wins tonight’s game, this series is as good as done.
With plenty of hockey still to be played, there's more highlight reel excitement to come from Alex the Great and Sid the Kid. And that's a sports betting lock!
