The Chicago Black Hawks, on the button to make a make a goaltending move after picking up perennial all-star Nikolai Khabibulin earlier in the week, dealt former starter Jocelyn Thibault to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a fourth-round draft pick in 2006.
The Penguins, NHL doormats in the 2003-2004 season, continue their dramatic makeover in the new and improved NHL. After drafting teenage phenomenon Sidney Crosby, the Pens have also added Sergei Gonchar and Zigmund Palffy.
The Vancouver Canucks have resigned forwards Daniel and Henrik Sedin to one-year deals. The same goes for the Ottawa Senators and Martin Havlat who agreed to terms on a one-year deal as well. The Senators also signed forward Mike Fisher to a three-year contract.
The Toronto Maple Leafs signed Wade Belak and Aki Berg to one-year deals and continue to negotiate with Eric Lindros, who worked out for the Leafs on Wednesday.
The San Jose Sharks signed center Wayne Primeau to a two-year contract and the Columbus Blue Jackets signed center Jan Hrdina to a one-year deal.
The Boston Bruins came to terms with winger Sergei Samsonov and continue to up the offer for Joe Thorton, which now stands at $32.5 million for five years.
The Philadelphia Flyers resigned goalie Robert Esche to a two-year contract, while the Calgary Flames confirmed the retirement of goalie Roman Turek. The Flames also resigned defenseman Andrew Ference.
