The defending champion NY Rangers for the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference. If they hope to remain in the race, they will need to start producing wins, despite the chemistry clashes the team is suffering.
Usually, there is no better team to snap a slump than against the Washington Capitals. The Caps have dropped their last five games due to the fact that they are trying to give more playing time to their youngsters and prospects. Not helping matters is goalie Olaf Kolzig’s knee injury, which has kept him on the side lines.
The Hurricanes are not having a problem getting shots off. Their recent problem has simply been putting them past the goalie. Having forward Erik Cole’s big body parked in front of the crease will certainly help matters for Carolina.
However, the Capitals will be looking to prevent another season-worse six-game losing streak. Alexander Semin and Alexander Ovechkin have played extremely well, despite the rest of the roster floundering. Look for them to cause an upset as Carolina struggles to find the team chemistry that made them champions last year.
The Capitals, for whatever reason, crank it up a notch when playing the Hurricanes. All six contests between the two have been decided by three or more goals. The Capitals crushed the Canes 7-3 on January 27th in their last meeting.
