Los Angeles Kings at St. Louis Blues
Saturday, October 10 – Scottrade Center, St. Louis
The Kings entered this season amidst high expectations yet again, but this time it may be for real. LA is coming off a big win against San Jose, a team they have always had trouble against in the past. The Kings probably have the best collection of young talent in the league, and if they all start to become good at the same time, Los Angeles could finally become a force to be reckoned with.
St. Louis Blues started off the season better than anyone could have expected. They travelled to Sweden and swept the Detroit Red Wings in a two-game series. After last year’s incredible run to the playoffs and this year’s hot start, fans are wondering if this Blues team is for real. Despite a setback on Thursday in the form of a 4-2 loss to the Thrashers, the Blues have the tools to make another run at the playoffs.
What The Kings Have To Do To Win:
Los Angeles Kings need to force the Blues to take penalties without taking any of their own. Los Angeles ranks second in the league in power play efficiency but are dead last in the penalty kill. That kind of disparity isn’t uncommon for an up and coming team, but if the Kings want a legit shot of April hockey they need to be able to fix their PK.
The goaltending situation needs to fix itself. Jon Quick has been less than spectacular so far to open the season, and they’ll need better net-minding in order to have a successful season. The Kings have blue chippers in the minors, and it may be necessary to bring up someone like Jonathon Bernier to put pressure on Quick to win.
What The Blues Have To Do To Win:
The Blues have been lucky to get a large chunk of scoring from their veterans. Both Keith Tkachuk and Paul Kariya have at least two goals so far this season. The vets success is helping to keep the pressure off the rookies and young guns who may still be trying to find their legs. In order for St. Louis to continue their hot start the vets must continue to carry the load before the Brad Boyes’ and David Backes’ of the team are ready to take over.
Goalie Chris Mason must also continue to be a strong presence in net. Mason was a huge reason for the Blues playoff run last year, and has only shown flashes of that so far this season. Mason and the Blues have allowed 14 goals in four games so far this season, not good numbers for a playoff contender.
Outlook & Pick
Both teams are looking to surprise the NHL and emerge as a strong playoff threat. St. Louis may have a legit shot. If Chris Mason can stay healthy and effective the Blues will find themselves in a playoff hunt, and maybe even giving Detroit and Chicago a little run for their money. The Kings can be good, but it may take a little longer for them to be that good.
Pick: St. Louis Blues
