Origional Six Matchup - Boston Bruins at Toronto Maple Leafs
by Ian James

The big news out of the Boston Bruins camp is not that they had their two game winning streak halted, rather that they may have lost forward Marc Savard for the remainder of the season. Savard suffered a Grade Two concussion on a dirty blind-side hit to the head courtesy of Pittsburgh's notorious pest Matt Cooke.
In a play we’ve seen far too many times the last few seasons, Cooke took advantage of an unsuspecting Savard shoulder right to the head from the blind side. Savard was knocked unconscious and had to be taken off the ice on a stretcher thanks to the cheap shot.
What is troublesome is that there was no penalty called on the play, as to the naked eye at full speed, it may appear as a clean hit. But when you slow the play down, you can tell that Cooke knew exactly what he was doing. The fact that this type of hit has become so prevalent in hockey lately, with obviously damaging results to the player taking the head shot, the league officials have been taking aim at this kind of hit and a suspension is very probable considering Cooke’s reputation as a dirty player.
"A guy like that has to be suspended," Bruins head coach Claude Julien said of Cooke. "And that's the way I see it, because it's an elbow to the head from the blind side. That's exactly the example they show of what we've got to get out of this game."
This has to anger Boston fans something serious, as not only was it a dirty play, but they have lost one of their best offensive weapons for an undetermined amount of time. Savard, when he is in the line-up, is one of the better setup men in the league, but he has missed so much time the last few years. Just this season, Savard has missed 23 of Boston's 64 games with foot and knee injuries. Yet, despite missing all those games, he is still tied for third in scoring with 33 points.
This couldn’t come at a worse time either as the Bruins are in a heated race for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. They’ll have a chance to bolster those playoff hopes as they face one of the league’s worst teams tonight. The B’s travel north of the boarder to take on the Toronto Maple Leafs in tonight's clash between Original Six rivals.
Here are some NHL Betting trends for the game tonight:
- Home team is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings.
- Bruins are 8-1 in the last 9 meetings.
- Bruins are 4-1 in the last 5 meetings in Toronto.
- Over is 11-3 in the last 14 meetings.
Every point is big for the Bruins as they are currently holding the eighth and final spot in the Eastern Conference with 69 points, two points up on the New York Rangers.
The Maple Leafs have been out of it for a while now and have already started thinking about next season. They suffered their fifth loss in 6 games on Sunday to the Philadelphia Flyers by a 3-1 score.
With emotions running high and Boston’s recent success over the Leafs, winning three of four meetings this year, the Bruins are looking like a strong play at -125.
