Caster Semenya's Gender Test Update
by Ian James

Caster Semenya has gone through a turbulent few months to say the least. Despite having to deal with the resignation of her coach and the imminent release of gender tests, the South African track star showed off her feminine side by becoming a cover girl for a You, a very popular English magazine.
The 18 year has seen her life been flipped upside down since she won the 800-metre race in Berlin last month with a blazing time of one minute, 55.45 seconds, well ahead of any competitor. Even before her dominating performance in Berlin there had been issues raised about her gender and it’s been reported that testing had taken place without her knowledge.
The saga got even more bizarre on Monday when her coach, Wilfred Daniels, resigned after it was revealed Ms. Semenya underwent secret gender testing before her race in Berlin. Daniels thought it was a standard doping test but he felt that he had let his star runner down. "We did not handle Caster properly. The handling of the issue was atrocious," he told The Star newspaper of South Africa.
So what’s a girl to do? Well she’s taking the high road and doing a little PR for her self by appearing very lady like in a fashionable dress and stilettos for the cover of You Magazine (Click here to see picture). “I didn’t do this to prove a point but rather to have fun. I don’t give a damn what people say about me. I like me the way I am and who cares what other people say?” the young track star told reporters. “I enjoyed the shoot, wish I could do more, but I can’t because I don’t have time for them. I have training to prepare for the Commonwealth Games, which are soon, and [studies] to get through at the same time.” “I’d like to dress up more often and wear dresses, but I never get the chance. I’d also like to learn to do my own make-up,” she added.
The IAAF expects the results of the much anticipated gender tests within days. Once they arrive, IAAF officials will pore over the complicated report, and are expected to make an announcement on Ms. Semenya's gender within another two weeks.
