Lady Gaga is a Hermaphrodite?

Lady Gaga Plays For Both Teams?

Before you get all hot and bothered to start Googling like crazy, you have to take all of these rumors with a grain of salt. Now I’ve seen the footage from her live show where “Lord Gaga” came dangling out for a brief moment, and after I was done vomiting, I got in to a little research.

Lady Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, has been on the scene as a provocative singer / song writer / attention whore for the better side of three years now. And when you consider that her name’s derived from a song by Queen called “Radio Gaga” and that the first person she lists as her musical influence as the great shock-master, David Bowie, then you’re forced to step back for a second to believe just how valid this piece of news is. My concern isn’t whether Lady Gaga is actually a man or a woman or both. I don’t’ really care. What you are does not define who you are in this world, and Lady Gaga is doing a somewhat masterful job of ensuring that she’s remembered for all the right, and wrong, reasons.

Lady Gaga has made it no secret that she identifies herself as a “Glam Rocker”, a person who is so wildly provocative that it sets the roof on fire. She’s incredible on stage, and anyone who has seen her shows notes at just how wildly audacious her sets are, how electric she is on stage and how much she commits to the “big” moments during the show. Lady Gaga, for all intents and purposes, is the re-invention of “Madonna” (the early 80’s one…not the crazy new millennium one with the Kabbala beads).

Madonna practically wrote the book on how to become a female rock star. When she wrote “Like A Prayer” everyone thought that she was expanding on some strong religious views. Little did everyone realize that the song was actually about a woman pleasing a man with her mouth (note: before you get angry that I wrote that, go listen to the song with that thought in mind, and when you remember your kid sister or little daughter doing a lip-sync to that song, remember who to be mad at – Madonna, not me). Madonna has since become a huge icon in pop culture, signing $120 million contracts. Is it that insane for a 23 year-old sensation like Lady Gaga to try and do the very same?

The challenge for Lady Gaga is that Madonna did it in a time when the world was incredibly politically correct, exposure was difficult and people weren’t as open-minded. Think about how different it is growing up in the 80’s than it is today and how much kids are exposed to, in this case quite literally. Madonna’s envelope wasn’t too hard to push. People were conservative and there were so many things that people simply didn’t talk about in public. She even wrote a book about sex and nearly gave half of America a conniption. Now Lady Gaga apparently has a “bat and a glove” and people’s reactions are mixed. This kind of stuff just doesn’t have the legs it used to in the media.

What’s it all done for the young Lady Gaga though? Whether it’s true or not, and it likely is just a false pretense, it’s given her major publicity. A quick Googling of the word “hermaphrodite” and Lady Gaga is in four of the top-10 hits. She’s actually the first one. Also, please take my word on this because if you actually Google that word, a really bad picture comes up and I don’t want you guys yelling at me because I didn’t’ warn you. Please just believe me.

Lady Gaga’s music is fantastic. It’s different, which is tough to do considering how many acts we’re bombarded with on a daily basis. Her attitude is captivating, and her sense of fashion and style grabs the attention of cameras the same her music grabs the attention of the next generation. I mean she wore a plastic dress that was practically made of bubble wrap and it caught news.

The funny thing is that there is something completely genuine and mature about the way she does things. She’s 23 years-old, and before you start comparing her to the likes of Gwen Stefani or Christina Aguilera, just remember that Lady Gaga was invited to join Julliard, and briefly attended NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. She’s an accomplished musician, and a good one at that. You can tell in her songs and her videos that she’s going for shock value. It’s part of the game.

Whether I care about this news in five years depends on how relevant Lady Gaga is at that time. Trust me, if Lady Gaga continues to be as prominent in the scene as she is right now, the fact she can play for both teams is going to be the least interesting news about her. What I am much more intrigued by is if Lady Gaga can stay pertinent to the conversation in the next five, ten and twenty years. Think about all the great sports heroes that we like to think are the second comings of our favorites from the past:

We thought Penny was going to be the next Magic Johnson. We thought Grant Hill was going to be the next Michael Jordan. We hope LeBron can be.

We think Sidney Crosby will break Gretzky’s records.

We hope Albert Pujols is actually clean, and can be the greatest baseball player of all time in light of The Babe and Hank Aaron.

As a culture, we expect our icons to be reborn because we don’t want to believe that legends can die. It’s a pleasure of ours to watch from the stands as stars evolve in to icons. We want to see greatness in our lifetime. Most certainly we’ve seen enough failure as potential fades to nothing, as if the media spotlight had a light switch that couldn’t be turned back on. Is Lady Gaga just another flicker of talent that will fade, or the real second coming of Madonna? I’m betting that it’s the latter…but we said that about Britney as well.
