A Glimpse At The 90th Academy Awards

The 90th Academy Awards are on the away. From the Dolby Theatre just outside of Los Angeles - many of the most famous awards will be handed out. One of the awards given out is the Best Picture. Let's take a look at what the films are that are going to have a chance at winning the award.

Call Me By Your Name:
This is a great coming of age drama film that was picked up for distribution by Sony Pictures Classic. It's been out since November of 2017 and went full film just over a month ago. Elio is a 17 year old Jewish boy from the Northern Italian Country side. There is a great amount of plot twists along with romance to be one of the favorites to win the event.

Darkest Hour:
This is a British War Film. It started at the Telluride Film Festival and screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. The Darkest Hour takes place in 1940 and is a brilliant film that takes viewers back in time. Adolf Hitler can be found in this film as well.

Dunkirk:
This war film written and directed by Christopher Nolan portrays evacuation from three perspectives, the land, the sea and the air. Filming for Dunkirk started in May 2016, and opened in July 2017. It has received 8 nominations during the 23rd Critics Choice Awards including one for Best Editing.

Get Out:
Written and Directed by Jordan Peele and starring Daniel Kaluuya as Chris. Chris is a black man that dates a white girl. The film has been all over the awards and took a great box office gathering. Some accounts say over $255M was grossed on this movie, well over the $4M budget.

Lady Bird:

This coming of age comedy and drama film stars Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf. A High School senior has a rocky relationship with her mother. The film was premiered back in September at the Telluride Film Festival. It took in over $48M which is nearly $40M more than the budget it worked with. Lady Bird is part of five nominations at the Academy Awards this winter.

Phantom Thread:
This historical period drama was written and directed by the famous Paul Thomas Anderson. The scene is set in London, where Lesley Manville is one of the top roles. The film was chosen by the National Board or Review as one of the top films during 2017. Phantom Thread is a great film for all the movie goers.

The Post:
The Post is a 2017 American Historical drama political film. Steven Spielberg is involved in this movie, which is set in New York City. Critics have praised this film and talked about the references to American history both past and present. This is a fun movie for history buffs all over the world to watch.

The Shape of Water:
This fantasy drama starring Sally Hawkins was part of the 74th Venice International Film Festival. The Shape of Water was released in December 2017 and was selected as one of the to Top 10 films of the Year. The Shape of Water stars Elisa Esposito, a mute woman with mysterious sars on her neck.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
This film received 7 nominations for the 90th Academy Awards. Mildred Hayes is grieving over numerous terrible incidents that have happened in her life. This film takes you through her life, and talks about the billboards. This movie will have you guessing.
