Big Slew - - 4/1 morning line
This 6-year old gelding out of Petionville is coming out of a one mile race where he lost by 15 ¾ lengths. What many online racebook fans see as a weakness, I see as strength. Big Slew is obviously much better at Mountaineer Park where he has two wins out of three starts with a third place finish in that third start. Trainer Ronald Moquett is winning at a 30% clip. The outside draw could be worrisome but dropping from a $40,000 optional claimer at Ellis Park into this $28,400 allowance n2x at Mountaineer is actually a drop in class. Big Slew is at least worth the win and place online wagers.
The Last Wave - - 5/2 morning line
Out of Malibu Moon this fella is stretching-out from 6 furlongs to this mile distance. He’s also going first off the claim for trainer Cody Autrey. Autrey does well first off the claim winning with 24% of his starters. The Last Wave should get the lead in this race with Big Slew in hot pursuit. He could take this field wire-to-wire.
Grapelli - - 2/1 morning line
The likely morning line chalk will be trying the Mountaineer dirt course for the first time after running at Presque Isle Downs. Grapelli might enjoy the return to conventional dirt after running over the Presque Isle Downs artificial surface. He could return to form after that last race where he lost by over 10 lengths. The issue is whether or not he can make a trip after breaking from the one hole and whether or not he will return to the form that has garnered him over $100,000 dollars in purse money. Because his trainer is Steve Asmussen, Grapelli’s going to be super-chalky which makes him a bad wager in the win and place pools.
Wagering Strategy
I’m going to make an online wager on Big Slew to win and place as well as putting him in exacta and trifecta boxes with Grapelli and The Last Wave.
