Academy Awards: Who are the favorites to win?

Will Bridges Get Upset in the Best Actor Category? How about Sandra Bullock in the Best Actress Category

The Oscars are on this Sunday. I already wrote the joke about how the golden statue is basically a eunuch and how the Oscars were created by rich people for rich people.

So, I won’t bother you with those jokes again. Oh, wait, I just did. Anyhow, here’s some insight into the acting categories. If you want to read my Oscar Picks for Best Director and the writing categories, check out my other Oscar article.

Oscar Night: 3/7/2010
Oscar Time: 8:00 pm EST

2010 Oscars: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress

Best Actor

The Winner Will Be: Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart -800

It would take a massive failure of the Academy system for Bridges to lose. I know, the odds suck but Bridges has the two biggest advantages that an actor can have going into the Oscars. First, he comes from old Hollywood, has been acting forever, and has never won the award before. Second, his performance in Crazy Heart was actually hands down the best performance of the year. Don’t go looking for an upset in this category.

Best Underdog Bet: None

I’d say Colin Firth but I’d expect at least +35000 on the guy before I’d even think about betting him to beat Bridges. His performance in A Single Man was terrific. Sorry, Colin. Right movie, wrong year.

Best Actress

The Winner Will Be: Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side -180

Hollywood loves, absolutely adores, Sandra Bullock. When rumors spread that she might be nominated for While You Were Sleeping in 1995, she let it be known that she shouldn’t be nominated because, according to her, she “hadn’t done anything yet”. Blowhards in Hollywood hate other blowhards so I suspect that every blowhard in the Academy will reward Bullock for that 1995 statement. Personally, I didn’t think she was all that great in The Blind Side and I wasn’t thrilled about the movie, but, hey, she’s a cool chick and her husband is a dope dude.

Best Underdog Bet: Gabby Sidibe in Precious +1400

Precious is the underdog movie of 2009 and Sidibe is the underdog actress of all time. Not just 2009, my friends, but all time. I’m going to be blunt, okay? There is no way in any universe that Sidibe ever, ever, ever receives another Oscar nomination. It just isn’t going to happen. Precious is the perfect movie for her and she did a perfect job in it. Her lack of ever receiving another Oscar nomination has nothing to do with her being fat. Okay, maybe it does. Hollywood doesn’t make serious movies about fat black women. That’s not their thing. Some Academy voters might be forthcoming enough about that fact with themselves to realize that Sidibe should be rewarded for the job she did in Precious.

Best Supporting Actor

The Winner Will Be: Christoph Waltz in Inglourious Basterds -3500

He was great, okay? Even I can’t make a case for anyone else and I’m always looking for the overlay. If possible put Waltz into some parlay or something, but trying to beat the guy would be ridiculous. Seriously. The word was out on Waltz’s victory 6 months before Inglourious Basterds was released. Waltz has won every single pre-Oscar award including the Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actor. I also heard he’s in line for a Wheaties box cover because the American athletes in the 2010 Winter Olympics were so damn boring.

Best Underdog Bet: None

Unless you know something that the Satellite Award voters don’t, there’s no reason to even discuss anyone else in this category.

Best Supporting Actress

The Winner Will Be: Monique in Precious -2000

Everybody loves Monique and, let’s be honest, she was amazing in Precious. Just amazing. So, she deserves it. The problem I have with Monique’s almost sure-fire victory is that the Academy is going to give the ball less golden man to her as an overall award to Precious. In other words, I can see a lot of Academy voters saying to themselves, “We’ll give Monique the Oscar so we don’t have to give it to Sidibe as Best Actress.” Wrong! Both should be rewarded.

Best Underdog Bet: Maggie Gyllenhall in Crazy Heart +2500

Then again, maybe it goes the other way. Maybe, enough Academy voters say, “Why give the award to Monique? I’m voting for Sidibe to win Best Actress!” If that happens, then Gyllenhall will win Best Supporting Actress. Why? Because Penelope Cruz won in 2008 for Vickey Cristina Barcelona and Anna Kendrick and Vera Farmiga are both nominated for the same freakin’ movie, Up In the Air. Gyllenhall could pull off the shocker of the night.
