American Idol Betting - 10 Overhyped Men

Bookmark and Share by Mike Rose

The men got notice that they’d be taking the stage early this week due to Crystal Bowersox having health complications. After making little to no impact in American Idol betting last week, I thought the short notice might aid the guy’s abilities this time around. While they were better overall, there were only a couple of contestants that I felt did enough to guarantee themselves a ticket to next week’s show.

Safe:

Michael Lynche (+4000) – Big Mike simply blew the judges away, especially Randy Jackson, with his cover of James Brown’s “It’s A Man’s World”. I stated last week how Mike’s personality and energy will carry him through a couple rounds of this competition. Look for those traits to do exactly that on Thursday.

Casey James (+600) – The kid from Kool, TX saw his American Idol odds get cut in half from last week’s show moving from a +1200 to +600 choice, but both Simon and Kara thought he came off as ordinary in covering Gavin DeGraw’s “I Don’t Wanna Be”. Still, this cat’s got the look and personality to move on.

Alex Lambert (+2200) – The judges thought Alex’ cover of John Legend’s “Everybody Knows” was a major improvement from last week. He does possess a very unique voice, but Simon thinks he needs to find his killer instinct in order to become relevant in this competition. Lambert survives another week.

Lee DeWyze (+1200) – Lee looked out of sorts without a guitar in tote, but I honestly have to say he’s the lone male contestant that has this AI viewer psyched to see him on a weekly basis. It also helps that he’s current, and of the mold of AI winners from years past like David Cook and Kris Allen. Don’t be shocked to see him the men’s favorite to win it all when American Idol betting opens up next week.

On the Bubble:

John Park (+4000) – I felt John chose a terrible song to sing last week and made a terrible first impression. He tried to become current taking on John Mayer’s “Gravity” this time around, but he didn’t do anything to it to make his version stand out. I think this Northbrook native has a following and will manage to sneak through another week, but wouldn’t be shocked if he got the boot either.

Todrick Hall (+3000) – What the heck is up Todrick? That was pretty much the gist of what the judges had to say to Mr. Hall. I don’t get it though. We always hear the judges tell the contestants they don’t do enough to make songs their own. Todrick did his best with Tina Turner’s classic, but I think he played with fire trying to make this one his own and it blew up in his face.

Jermaine Sellers (+4000) – I don’t know exactly what Jermaine’s look has transformed into, but I can do without it. Simon can to after he came away frustrated and disappointed with his cover of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On”. What is going on Mr. Sellers? I’ll tell you exactly what’s up! I had you axed last week and was shocked you survived; you won’t pull off the feat in back-to-back weeks. Back to the church choir you go.

Andrew Garcia (+350) – Now I know there’s no way that Garcia is getting bounced from the show this week, but this emotional papa better step it up after churning out a pair of uninspiring performances the last two weeks. Look for his odds to gain value this week. I’m still going to take a wait and see approach to see if he can come up with a magical outing like he did during “Hollywood Week”. He might have peaked early, and the big stage might not be for him. I’m hoping he proves me wrong.

Aaron Kelly (+1200) – After getting decent reviews last week, Aaron saw his value plummet from +4000 all the way down to +1200 at this week’s open. Unfortunately for him, those odds will increase in value next week if he’s not voted off the show. Simon felt he went backwards with his “My Girl” rendition, while the other three the judges loved it. It’s remarkable to me how the panel sees things so differently sometimes. Still, the youngster of this group might sneak through.

Tim Urban (+8000) – I had Urban gone from last week’s show, and the expression on his face when he found out he was sticking told me he felt he was gone as well. Even though Ellen, Randy, and Kara ripped him apart, Simon felt his outing showed marked improvement from last Wednesday. At the very least, he didn’t make me cringe like many of the other contestants did last night. This big underdog might just survive another week.

If weekly elimination odds were posted this week, I’d max bet Sellers to go. He escaped the axe last Thursday, but won’t this time around. It wouldn’t shock me in the least if either Hall, Park, or Urban joined him.
