Celtic-Rangers rivalry and edge

Bookmark and Share by Ric Rice

The Old Firm rivalry is one of the oldest and fiercest in the world of soccer.  It dates back to the late 19th century when Celtic were founded in Glasgow's East End. These teams met for the first time way back in May 28 1888 at Celtic Park. This was also Celtic's the teams first ever match and around 2,000 fans saw the home side win 5-2. The last time they played was last week in the League Cup where 60,000 fans cheered Celtic on to a 2 goal to nothing home win over their Rivals.

'The Old Firm' name originated during the early year of the 20th century when the clubs began to dominate Scottish football and the term in part referred to the financial benefits associated with their frequent meetings.

In the 60's Glasgow Celtic are famous for their dominance with a run of league championships capped with the 1967 win over Inter Milan in the European Cup final, being the first British team to bring back the much coveted cup to the British Isles. Of course Rangers had their time more recently with an equal 9 championships from 1989 to 1997. Since then both teams have shared the league championship 4 times each, that leads us to now.

Glasgow Celtic are top of the Scottish Premier League - check this, they are kick Rangers' ass by a whole 12 point lead. Woo ha! Rangers however beat their Old Firm rivals 3 goals to 2 at the start of the season.

Celtic must be odds on favourite to win this epic clash with in form Shaun Maloney tipped to get on the score sheet and its about time the Japanese midfield attack force in the shape of Shunsuke Nakamura steps up and blasts one in the back of the net. Alas Brazilian legend and now Japanese coach Zico has pulled him from this important game for a totally UNIMPORTANT friendly game against Angola in the Saitama Stadium, Japan.

Let's wrap this up.  Rangers are coming off a cold streak of:

LWDDWDDDDL - so that's two wins, a 5-1 home win against weak Dunfermline and a 2-0 home win against a weaker Motherwell. I am totally convinced they are going into this clash At Celtic Park AKA "Paradise" short stacked.

BOOM! Check Celtic record:

WWWWDWWWWW - I just don't even have to say ANYTHING more :) The last W was a WIN against Rangers 2-0 at Celtic Park, bring it on!
