London, England – Largely considered a championship of 127 men against one man – the four-time defending champion Roger Federer – betting on tennis betting action this season.
So who will prevail at Wimbledon? Here is a break down of the four quarters of the draw.
Federer’s Quarter
Arriving with a 48 match-winning streak on grass, four time defending champion Roger Federer is the unquestionable favorite in his quarter, which includes Marat Safin, Tommy Haas, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Fernando Gonzalez and James Blake.
Despite his favoritism, Federer’s task is not as easy at it would seem. In the second round, Federer will face Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina (a rising clay court phenomenon), but by all indications, he should prevail.
The real challenge for Federer begins in the third round, where he will meet the winner of Marat Safin vs. (Q)Aisam Ul-Haq Qureshi. In all likelihood, the second round will play out to pre-tournament predictions with Safin meeting Federer in the third round.
Although Safin can be unpredictable, an upset is not unlikely as Safin is the last man, other than Nadal, to beat Federer at a Grand Slam event (Safin defeated Federer 5-7, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(6), 9-7, at the 2005 Australian Open Final).
If Federer gets past Safin in the third round, he would face a potential matchup with Tommy Haas or Dmitry Tursunov. In the quarterfinal round, which would start in the second week and is harder to predict, pre-tournament picks give way to James Blake or Fernando Gonzalez.
However, as this is Wimbledon, a place of history and tradition, Federer just like his surroundings, is a man of tradition – a tradition of winning on Centre Court. The thought of an upset in any of the rounds is almost unfathomable. It is almost a forgone conclusion that Federer will reach the semifinal round of his beloved Wimbledon.
Roddicks Quarter
With the withdrawal of Andy Murray, pundits are smug with the notion that A-Rod’s quarter appears less menacing, confidently picking Roddick to sail through to a semifinal meeting with Federer.
However, Roddick’s quarter includes Ivan Ljubicic, who recently won the Queen’s Club Championships last week, and Richard Gasquet, who holds two career titles on grass.
Nevertheless, with Andy Murray’s withdrawal, it is no understatement that Roddick’s quarter is the easiest of the championships. With that in mind, Andy Roddick should be a smart bet through to the semifinal.
Semifinal Pick: If, according to pre-tournament predictions, a Federer/Roddick semifinal presents itself at Wimbledon, unfortunately, Roddick does not stand a chance, and Federer would be the sure bet without a second thought. Roger that!
Unless, of course, a miracle should happen and Federer is somehow eliminated in the previous rounds. Then Roddick’s odds, on the vein of divine intervention, would improve greatly.
