Serena Williams shopping spree: a possible splurge on the Miami Dolphins?

Toronto, Canada – Arguably, one of America’s best female tennis exports, Serena Williams has made no secret about her love for shopping. Why she has been photographed on the red carpet of many a premier Hollywood event, bejewelled and dazzling in some fancy designers’ creation – too many times to even count. She has been sighted during fashion week, sitting pretty front-and-centre, earmarking items from the latest collections paraded on the catwalks of New York before an awestruck, all A-list crowd. Indeed, whether its on-court outfits, complemented by various accessories, or off-court trousseau, Serena loves to splurge.

Now, don’t get me wrong, the point of this little titbit is not to rain on her parade (I too love shopping; my budget just happens to be a tad smaller; still, I can appreciate a woman after my own heart, no?). The opposite. The latest rumour making its rounds in the press is a potential splurge considered by Serena – and it is no small thing. Not unless you think a stake in the National Football League is. A stake on one of its most precious and celebrated teams?

Apparently, Serena Williams, in typical vague fashion, seemed to confirm reports that she and her sister Miami Dolphins.

We don’t know what’s going on,” Williams said after her second-round match at the Rogers Cup Wednesday night in Toronto. “There’s been preliminary talks and, hopefully, it will work out. I mean, that would be a great opportunity for both of us. We’ll see what happens.” [National Post]

The Williamses live in Florida and not far from where the Dolphins play. The Williamses would be the latest in celebrity co-owners Stephen Ross has lined-up since taking over the team in January, including Gloria and Emilio Estefan and Marc Anthony.

It seems that, Jimmy Buffet was also made an offer to invest in the Dolphins but no reports of his accepting the offer have been circulated yet. Not for a lack of subtle coercion – I mean sound business incentives thrown in his way: the Dolphins stadium has been renamed in a sponsorship deal with Buffets beer brand to Land Shark Stadium. Buffet, apparently, in response to the renaming of the Stadium maybe, wrote an ode/song for the Dolphins. Seriously! What next a bejewelled personal box in the stadium?

All I can say girls: if you do decide to go ahead with this mega investment in the Miami Dolphins then no-pussy-footing-around-the-whole-thing. None of this grandstanding by Buffet! Just show the boys how it is done.
