Gstaad, Switzerland – tennis wagering action.
Tennis Betting Line: Stanislas Wawrinka vs. Guillermo Canas
Tennis Prediction: Top seed Stanislas Wawrinka just barely edged past compatriot, wild card entrant, Stephane Bohl when he was stretched to the limit in a 7-6(6), 5-7, 7-6(3) thriller. On one hand, the all-Swiss affair was an exciting opener for the tournament but on the other, the expectation was Stanislas Wawrinka would be imperious in the anticipated triumph. The opening performance does not bode well for the top seed and it is a bit of a shaken and unsettled Wawrinka who enters the quarterfinal where he will meet perhaps one of the grittiest clay-courters on tour in the form of Guillermo Canas.
Over his career, Guillermo Canas enjoyed his best results on clay. Last year when he returned to the main circuit, he enjoyed a standout year, including a double coup against Federer when he beat him in back-to-back tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami. He finished the year in the top 20. This season has not been as successful for the now 30-year-old Canas. Injuries and various setbacks have seen him slip in rankings from No. 13 way back in February to No.54. Nevertheless he should not be underestimated.
Canas is known to rise to the occasion, playing sometimes his best tennis when he is the underdog. Wawrinka on the other hand is the tournament’s favourite as the top seed and top Swiss in action. His first test did not go smoothly. As such, he may be on the verge of an upset in the next round. So long as Canas is in top form he can oust the Swiss to deliver the tournament’s second big upset.
Tennis Free Picks: Canas in three sets
Tennis Betting Line: Igor Andreev vs. Marin Cilic
Tennis Prediction: Russian Igor Andreev is sooooo talented on clay it’s almost shocking he has not won more titles on clay during his career. No. 34 Andreev owns three career ATP titles – of which all came in 2005 and two were on clay. In 2008, Andreev posted mixed results – seesawing from good to bad from tournament to tournament. Inconsistency is synonymous with Andreev and is most likely the root cause of his failure to live up to expectations.
Marin Cilic ranks No.43 in the world but as his stock in the tennis betting markets rises so will his ranking. Cilic enters the tournament unseeded but that did not deter him from ousting the tournaments defending champion, second seed Paul Henri Mathieu. By delivering the tournament’s first shock upset, Cilic is in good form to go one better. The confidence and mental boost such a triumph lends a player is immeasurable.
Cilic has a killer serve, which although can be neutralized somewhat on the red dirt, could still cause Andreev some problems. As long as Andreev remains focused his edge on this surface and punishing forehand should see him through to the quarterfinal.
Tennis Free Picks: Andreev in straight sets
