Eastbourne, England – As the quarterfinal round of the International Women’s Open concluded, Amelie Mauresmo and Nadia Petrova advanced to set up a semifinal matchup worthy of attention.
Nadia Petrova came back from a set down to advance past Sybille Bammer 6-7(6) 7-5 6-4, while Amelie Mauresmo easily overpowered youngster Shahar Peer 6-3 6-4.
2006 Wimbledon Champion Amelie Mauresmo will be anxious to make a statement at the International Women’s Open before she embarks on the defense of her title next week. With so much at stake for Mauresmo at this Wimbledon warm-up event, let us look at the odds for her semifinal matchup against Russian Nadia Petrova.
Tennis Prediction: – As the defending Wimbledon champion and world No. 4, Mauresmo will be favored for the victory.
Both Mauresmo and Petrova hold comparable records for the season – 22/8 and 24/10, respectively, and, with a title apiece this season, on paper, they stack up evenly.
In terms of head-to-head records, Mauresmo holds a slim edge over Petrova with a 5-4 career record, but the last two meetings between the pair went the way of Petrova.
If there were a deciding factor between these two power players, then it would be Petrova’s questionable form. Petrova needed three hours and two injury timeouts to defeat Sybille Bammer in a marathon three-set quarterfinal match. With Petrova’s form uncertain coming into the semifinal, it may prove to be the deciding factor.
While Mauresmo returned to tournament action a few a weeks ago at the 2007 French Open following an absence due to surgery on her appendix, at the International Women’s Open she has displayed no lingering affects.
Moreover, with the prospect of a final matchup against Henin a real possibility at the International Women’s Open final, the opportunity for a preview between the two Wimbledon favorites is almost too good to be true.
Tennis Free Picks: – Mauresmo for the quick two set victory.
