Flushing Meadow, New York – Saturday the BetUS Sportsbook offers a whole host of third round matchups to bet on with great angles for profit. If there were a time in the tournament, I would strongly encourage bettors to consider betting on the underdogs it would be in the third round. At this point, the competition gets tougher and the odds tighter.

The nature of Grand Slam matches (playing to the best of three sets) is conducive to upsets as players play longer and more exhaustive matches. A berth in the last 16 on the line, a player’s desire is truly tested and when the calibre and quality of players battling against each other is higher, anything can happen.

The top half of the draw enters the third round on Saturday. Matches start from 11:00 AM Eastern time. Here is a look at the 32 players vying for a place in the last 16.

Tennis Betting Line: James Blake -300 Mardy Fish +200

Tennis Wagering Analysis: This all-American affair has every opportunity of turning into the exciting first round match up that Blake played against compatriot Donald Young. Another all-out America duel it was a blockbuster billing that far-exceeded expectations going to five sets. The hope is this matchup will develop along the same vein. If it does, will Blake survive this time around?

Blake has had some ups-and-downs and not just from tournament to tournament but within his matches. Oft than not, he loses focus mid-match and allows a set or two to slip away from him. He did that against Donald Young and almost suffered his worst US Open defeat – not to mention most embarrassing.

Fish has had an up-and-down season but that is hardly a surprise as he is an all-or-nothing player. Sometimes it looks like he cares and other times it is almost as if he forgot he was mid match. But when he turns things on, he has a sensational serve and some of the silkiest shots on tour. His run to the Indian Wells final highlighted some his best weapons when he took down Federer in the semis. Fish had a recent encouraging run in New Haven, reached the final there where he lost to Marin Cilic.

Tennis Betting Verdict: This one can go anything from straight sets to five sets. Fish arrives for the first time in the third round of the US Open. This is his best home Grand Slam outing already but he can go one better tomorrow. If his game is on as the underdog, he has the game to stun Blake. Lifetime, Blake leads their head-to-head series 2-1; their last meeting was when he beat Fish last year in the New Haven final.

I am sure most bettors will take Blake for the win here but I like Fish to advance to the last 16.

Tennis Free Picks: Fish in five sets

Tennis Betting Line: Sam Querrey +110 Ivo Karlovic -150

Tennis Gambling Analysis: This will be another exciting third round encounter that has the makings of an instant classic. Two big-serving guys in Sam Querrey (6’6”) and Ivo Karlovic (6’10”) will duel for a berth in the last 16.

Querrey has the lead in their head-to-head series 2-1 lifetime but Karlovic had Querrey’s number this year when he beat him en route to the title in Nottingham (grass). In fairness though, Nottingham has seen Karlovic thrice a back-to-back champion and the surface is his best.

This time though, the third round at the US Open, Querrey has the slightest edge. More importantly, he has the added home court advantage.

Querrey reached the third round by crushing 12th seed Tomas Berdych in the first round and topping Nicolas Devilder in the second. Both matches were excellent displays from the American and if he carries the momentum, I cannot help but like his odds to advance.

Karlovic has a lot of weapons aside from his serve. He is exceptional at net play and for a tall guy moves very well.

Tennis Betting Verdict: This match should be up there in terms of excitement and surprises. Karlovic is favoured but with a partisan crowd cheering Querrey on, I believe he can deliver the upset.

Tennis Free Picks: Querrey in five sets
