Rogers Cup Betting, Swiss Doubleheader – Federer and Wawrinka, Canada’s Dancevic in the Mix

Bookmark and Share by Nila Amerova

Toronto, Canada – The late tennis-betting card at BetUS serves up two eye-catching encounters featuring the Swiss tandem of Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka.

Federer, who is making his first appearance since Wimbledon, takes on Juan Ignacio Chela in his tournament-opening encounter in the second round; meanwhile Wawrinka is set to go head-to-head with local favourite Frank Dancevic in the first round.

Federer owns a solid 4-0 edge over Chela, so his match should be straightforward. Or will it be? Could he still be suffering some post-Wimbledon hang-ups? In 2008, Federer lost his opener to Gilles Simon.

The Canadian should be buoyed after last night’s developments on Centre Court that saw the Canadian flag fly high. Compatriot Peter Polansky dumped Jurgen Melzer and the Canadian doubles act, Milos Raonic and Vasek Pospisil beat first-time doubles partners Rafael Nadal and Novak DJokovic. Wawrinka will be mindful of the domestic interest in his match but is Dancevic capable of such an upset?

Tennis Betting Line:

Juan Ignacio Chela +5  -115   +650   20  O -125   U -115
Roger Federer  -5  -125   -1400    20  O -125   U -115

Match Time: 07:30 PM Eastern Time (04:30 PM Pacific Time) Tuesday August 10, 2010

Broadcast: TSN 1 & 2, ESPN and Tennis Channel

Tennis betting Verdict: Federer is a staggering -1400 favourite. Clearly, bookies are not buying into all that he-is-a-spent-force-nonsense. He has a convincing 4-0 edge over Chela, three encounters of which were on hard courts. Importantly, he has lost only one of nine sets played.

The last time Federer and Chela clashed was in 2006 at the Rome Masters. So it has been some time since we have seen this matchup. Still, can’t say that Chela has developed into a tour de force over the last four years.

This should really be a straightforward match for Federer. An easy win. Only if, and that is a big if, there really is some Wimby hangover can I accept a Federer loss. And should that be the case, it will be all down to Federer unravelling rather than Chela playing lights out tennis.

Tennis betting Verdict: The way the local media is going on about this upcoming clash, one would think Canadian Frank Dancevic has a simple task, beat Wawrinka and become a hero. Simple enough. Polansky did it yesterday and ergo Dancevic can too.

In theory, there is nothing wrong with such an assumption I suppose. In reality, there is everything wrong with it. There is everything wrong with the player in question, Dancevic, that is.

Dancevic is talented enough but he is a bit of a head case in my opinion (sorry Canadian fans). I mean, he is just so full of himself. One great shot and he struts about as if he belongs. He would be a much better player, and a much higher ranked player, if he actually mustered up some respectable results. To do so, he would have to be focused and maybe a bit more humble.

To put a finer point on it, Dancevic is a long shot to win. Bookies are listing him at a modest +275 price but that rather generous price is to accommodate patriotic betting methinks, fuelled further by Polansky’s performance yesterday.

Wawrinka really should win this match. He is a firm favourite to do so at -450. I will admit this: he can be a bit of a mental train wreck at times and play himself out of a match. It is possible therefore, that Wawrinka could lose this match. I suppose, especially, if the crowd spurs Dancevic on.  More likely than not, he will win though.
