At the close of the second round of the 2007 Pattaya Women’s Open, the results were far from anticpated as none of the favorites lived up to expectations. Alicia Molik retired from the event due to a hamstring injury, allowing Gisela Dulko to advance to the quarterfinals without breaking a sweat. Meanwhile, Nicole Pratt, Martina Sucha and Tzipora Obziler all banked in on their underdog status to advance to the quarterfinals.
So with the quarterfinals only a few hours away, lets take a look at how the head-to-head matchups are shaping up with BetUS.com.
Martina Sucha -105 Sybille Bammer -135
Prediction: Martina Sucha pulled off the upset by defeating the No. 1 seed at this event, World No. 25 Marion Bartoli 4-6, 6-3,6-3. While the 98th ranked Slovakian Martina Sucha ranks lower in the WTA than 61st Sybille Bammer and is the underdog on this line, she holds a 5-0 record over Bammer that includes both clay and hardcourt surfaces. Considering that Sucha has not lost to Bammer yet and just defeated the No. 1 seed at this event, her price tag of -105 has excellent value. Of course, betting $105 to win $100 would not be a landslide win, but betting on this underdog to orchestrate the mini-upset is the sure bet on this line!
Result: Sybille Bammer def. Martina Sucha, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3
Shuai Peng -275 Tzipora Obziler +190
Prediction: Shuai Peng ranks 42nd in the WTA and arrives as the favorite in this matchup against Tzipora Obziler, who ranks 107th. Peng’s right-handed and two-handed forehand and backhand game favors the hardcourt surface. Peng holds a 2-0 record against Obziler, both of which were hardcourt court wins. I pick Peng to win this matchup.
Result: Shuai Peng (4) def. Tzipora Obziler, 6-3, 6-2
Gisela Dulko +125 Nicole Pratt -165
Prediction: No. 52 Gisela Dulko comes to this quarterfinal well-rested, having gotten a pass as a result of Alicia Molik’s untimely retirement in their second round matchup. As such, despite her underdog status, she might have the slight edge over the veteran No. 45 Nicole Pratt. This matchup could go either way. While Dulko has been a rather inconsistent player, on occasion she has been able to pull off the upset and despite having never faced Nicole Pratt before, Dulko’s price tag of +125 holds the better value. I pick Dulko to win this match in three tough sets.
Result: Gisela Dulko (6) def. Nicole Pratt, 6-2, 6-3
Sania Mirza -150 Mara Santangelo +110
Prediction: Sania Mirza’s made history when, in her impressive debut last year at the Australian Open, she reached the third round, becoming the first Indian woman to do so. Since then she has not lived up to expectations, and her subsequent Grand Slam event performances did not equal that of her debut performance. However, at this smaller Tier IV event, Mirza should fare well and with less pressure on her to perform, her powerful game should come together. While this is the first time these two will face each other, I pick Mirza to advance to the semifinals.
Result: Sania Mirza (5) def. Mara Santangelo (3), 6-4, 7-6 (7-4)
