Venus got off to a great start taking the first set 6-1 but then she faltered in the second, losing it 2-6, before she came back to take the third 6-4. Venus Williams advances to the second round where she will meet wild card contender Carolina Wozniacki.
Also advancing to the second round following the first day of play was Bethanie Mattek, Meilen Tu, Jill Craybas, Laura Granville, Abigail Spears and Shenay Perry of USA, Nicole Pratt of Australia, and Ioana Raluca Olaru of Romania.
Still to play in the top half of the draw:
Prediction: No. 1 seed at the RMK Tournament, Shahar Peer has been playing some incredible tennis in 2007 and should not have any trouble advancing past No. 97 Emma Laine of Finland.
Pick: Shahar Peer in straight sets
Prediction: The veteran player and World No. 262, Alina Jidkova is the slight favorite against No. 84 Milagros Sequera. Nevertheless, Sequera leads 1-0 in their head-to-head matchups, owing to a victory in 2001 on hardcourt. These two are almost evenly matched up and the victory could go to either one.
Pick: Sequera in two sets
Prediction: If rank is an indication then Sofia Arvidsson, ranked 74th in the world, would be the sure-fire winner over Ekaterina Bychkova, ranked 83rd. Arvidsson’s favorite surface is hardcourt, while Bychkova favors the clay. Moreover, Sofia Arvidsson returns to Memphis as the defending champion! Despite this, Bychkova is favored on this line?
Pick: Arvidsson in straight sets
Bottom Half of the Draw
Prediction: The favorite, No. 28 Samantha Stosur, should be able to advance past No. 105 Aleksandra Wozniak with relative ease.
Pick: Samantha Stosur in straight sets
Prediction: The favorite, Pin, trails 0-1 in her head-to-head matchups against Lepchenko, owing to a loss in 2006 on hardcourts. While Pin ranks higher than Lepchenko in the ATP, Lepchenko is a bet worth considering should she cash in on her underdog status.
Pick: Lepchenko in three sets.
Prediction: Both Birnerova and Gajdosova favor hardcourt surfaces and are tied 1-1 in their head-to-head matchups. This match is a tossup, but Birnerova is slightly favored.
Pick: Birnerova is three sets.
