On the women’s side of the RMK Championships in Memphis, Tennessee, Venus Williams has thus far made her sister Serena Williams proud. In her first event of 2007, the seventh seed and World No. 54 Venus Williams arrives at the quarterfinals, albeit not without difficulties. Also in the quarterfinals is the No. 1 seed Shahar Peer, Bethanie Mattek, defending champion Sofie Arvidsson, Meilen Tu, Samantha Stosur, Laura Granville and qualifier Ioana Raluca Olaru.
For the tennis odds that BetUS.com has in full swing for the quarterfinalist at the WTA RMK Championships.
Top half of the draw:
Peer vs. Mattek
Prediction: Shahar Peer is one of the hottest young ladies on the Tour and by all accounts, Peer should have no problems topping Mattek in the quarterfinals. While the US native will have a lot of fans in the crowd, it is Peer that is favored by the oddsmakers.
Pick: Peer in straight sets.
Prediction: World No. 70 Meilen Tu and World No. 74 Sofia Arvidsson are evenly matched up if rank is any indication. The only clear advantage that has earned Sofia Arvidsson her favorite status is that she is the tournaments defending champion. However, Tu has home court advantage, which does account for something in a game that is as much skill as it is in the mind. Arvidsson and Tu have never met on court before and as a result, this match could go either way.
Pick: Tu for the upset.
Prediction: As Serena Williams blazed a come back trail, Venus Williams is on course to carve her own. The seventh seed at the tournament arrives as the World No. 54 in the WTA ranks, however, her accolades and achievements speak for themselves. Despite her injuries, Venus Williams like her sister is a fighter. Look for her to fight her way through this match.
Pick: Venus Williams in straight sets
Prediction: World No. 254 Iaona Raluca Olaru has had an impressive run thus far at the RMK Championships reaching the quarterfinals. Although the qualifier Olaru has not faced off against very tough competitors. In her first round, she topped Wild Card contender Lauren Albanese and in the second round, she defeated another qualifier Abigail Spears. The quarterfinals match against No. 28 Samantha Stosur will be her first challenge at this tournament and perhaps the end of her Cinderella run.
Olaru has never played against Stosur, but that is no indication for the outcome of this matchup. By all accounts, the higher ranked should win this match and since Olaru only recently turned professional, there is little to suggest that she will orchestrate the upset.
Pick: Stosur in two sets.
Result: Ioana Ralucca Olaru def. Samantha Stosur (4), 5-1 retired
