Dmitry Tursunov +110
Tennis Prediction: After taking out Andy Roddick is stellar fashion in the second round, Janko Tipsarevic’s stock goes on the up in the tennis betting market. I liked his chances of delivering the upset at +450 on the money line against steeply favoured Andy Roddick (-900 favourite). Even more so, I like his odds against Dmitry Tursunov. The pair met only once before in ATP level play – way back in 2006 in Doha. The match went the way of the Russian Tursunov. But the record (over two years old) has little significance for tomorrows contest. On paper, there is very little that separates’ the two. In terms of the season, there is very little to tell them apart in match win/losses. In rankings, they are separated by a handful of berths. Overall, they are evenly matched.
If there were an edge, it goes to Tursunov in terms of surface. He is one of several players on the tour that has a great game on grass. Tipsarevic has the big win against Roddick giving him a mental edge. So which edge will prevail tomorrow? Typically, Tipsarevic does not play well against players that are close to him in ranking, raising his game to uber-levels against Top 10 players – such as the match against Roddick. So if history were an indicator he will lose tomorrow. Nevertheless, I feel he may be on the verge of breaking that duck.
Tennis Free Picks: Tipsarevic in four sets
Rainer Schuettler -140
Tennis Prediction: I have to admit, I underestimated Rainer Schuettler’s odds against James Blake. He did after all take him out of the French Open earlier this month. Following up that great performance, which most believed (myself included) was a fluke, with another stellar upset against the American in the second round of Wimbledon, we have what is known as a “journeyman” player who believes he can win on the big stage. Weighing in at No.94 in the world, the veteran Schuettler (32-years-old) has a good chance of advancing into the fourth round. Who would have thought that would have been possible when the draw came out. But up next for Schuettler is Guillermo Garcia Lopez (ranked No.104). Truth be told, the R16 berth is up for grabs here, but Schuettler has the mental edge with the big win. If he can carry the momentum into this match he can win.
Tennis Free Picks: Schuettler in straight sets
Arnaud Clement -115
Tennis Prediction: This is the first-ever meeting between 30-year-old Arnaud Clement and 27-year-old Jurgen Melzer. Considering the age of many players in the draw ranges from teenagers to early twenties this is a veteran matchup in the third round. A berth in the fourth round is up for grabs and with little separating the two the outcome of this matchup is up for grabs. Even the odds tell the same story as both fall in the favourite plane with Melzer slightly more favoured over Clement.
Tennis Free Picks: Clement in four sets
Marin Cilic EV
Tennis Prediction: In this section of the draw the matchup between Mathieu vs. Cilic would be the most anticipated. The path to the quarterfinal and semi-final is cleared of any big seeds (the demise of Roddick and Blake opened up this section of the draw) and either one is considered to have a great chance of making a deep run at Wimbledon. So which player will seize the opportunity?
Mathieu is favoured for the win here. He owns a 3-1 head-to-head record over Cilic – all matches were contested this season. This would be their fifth meeting this year and third on grass. On grass, they are tied 1-1 in 2008, with Cilic beating him for the first time last week in Nottingham. Betting on Cilic holds value as his victory against Mathieu could not have come at a more opportune moment – just before Wimbledon – giving him the confidence to play for the win against Mathieu. However, this is the big stage and as a relatively untried player on the big stage the 20-years-old talented Croatian’s handicap is the fact that the occasion may be bigger than he is right now. The Frenchman Mathieu on the other hand is no stranger to the big stage. But the talented player has a history of choking in big moments. The question is whether he can finally rise to the occasion and deliver on his potential.
This will be a close match. It is Mathieu’s – as the favourite – to lose. Both players have a big game and I expect it to go the distance. All four previous matches went the distance. With this being a Grand Slam I expect they will live up to their billing and go for five sets with the winner determined by a handful of points.
Tennis Free Picks: Mathieu in five sets
