Heavyweight Championship

Things worked out pretty much we had expected as Tim “The Maine-iac” Sylvia laid a savage beat down on a smaller, slower, outgunned Jeff Monson on Saturday night. By the end of the fifth round, Monson looked like he ran face first into a shovel while fending off an allergic reaction to a bee sting. His face blew up faster than Kirstie alley at a Krispy Kreme taste test marathon. Fortunately for Monson, he can now head down to 205 and contend for the light heavyweight belt where the competition, though very competitive, is a lot more diminutive. (Light Heavyweight Champ Chuck Liddell is only 6’2”, 204)

Tim Sylvia is now staring down upon a very spread out and shallow Heavywight division. He called out Brandon Vera who absolutely destroyed former champ and Tim Sylvia conqueror Frank Mir but after that, the heavyweight division is at a loss for serious, experienced contenders. There are a lot of up and comers, but nobody that would be ready to seriously challenge Tim Sylvia for his belt. Could we possibly see a Sylvia v. Arlovski 4? I hope so.

Welterweight Championship

OH Canada! As predicted, this welterweight clash proved to be one of the most exciting fights of the year as the hugely anticipated rematch between Georges St. Pierre and Champ Matt Hughes finally came to a head. Even though St. Pierre came into the fight as a slim underdog, from the moment the fight started he aggressively dominated Hughes from stand up to the mat. His striking was superb as he worked a stiff counter jab into Matt Hughes face, and followed it with a consistently landing right hand. When Hughes attempted to move towards St. Pierre for a takedown, he was either rocked by punches, tossed aside or taken down himself and dominated.

Hughes narrowly escaped a knockout at the end of the first round as St. Pierre landed a perfectly placed left hook that dropped him to his knees, but was saved by the bell before George could pounce. It didn’t go much further though, as St. Pierre landed a perfect left kick to the side of Matt Hughes head, then jumped on top to land a barrage of elbows and the fight was stopped by Big John Mcarthy.

Gracious in victory, St. Pierre offered a rematch to Matt Hughes immediately, and now that their series of matches sits at 1 -1, look for an early 07’ rubber match between these two amazing welterweights.
