Travis Lutter is nothing new to the world of mixed martial arts (MMA). But he is the underdog going into this Saturday's title bout against UFC middleweight champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva.
Lutter is 33 years old, holds a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, and has a professional record of 12 wins, 3 losses and 0 draws. Lutter now lives in Fort Worth, Texas and runs the ‘Travis Lutter's Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Academy’. He’s also a former high school and college wrestler. He starred in Season 4 of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF 4) reality TV show. The idea behind the show was that eight middleweights, sitting on the fringe of the UFC’s list of contenders, received the opportunity to compete in a single-elimination tournament with the winner earning a shot at the middleweight title. Lutter defeated Pete Sell, Edwin Dewees and Patrick Cote to get his shot at challenging current champion Anderson Silva.
Silva is the strong favorite, for the fight at Saturday's UFC 67: All or Nothing, at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
The line on the fight is Anderson Silva -400, Travis Lutter +350. You would have to wager $400 on Silva to make $100 while a $100 bet on Lutter would net a $350 profit. (This is subject to change.)
Lutter’s most famous victory so far was a one-punch knockout of Marvin Eastman at UFC 50 in 2004. I don’t think that’s going to happen against Silva.
Anderson Silva, is also a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and is a fearsome striker, with both speed and accuracy. Apart from the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we’ve also seen him give a master class in Muay Thai in his win over Rich Franklin to win the UFC Middleweight Championship back in June. The Brazilian clamped his hands behind Franklin's neck in a deadly Muay Thai clinch and hammered him with punishing knees. His UFC career so far consists of two fights and three minutes 48 seconds.
This has the makings of a great fight. If it’s a stand up battle, or if it goes to ground, either way we should be in for a good fight.
