Alvarez-Charlo Recap: Canelo Dominates ‘Superfight’

Yet Another Superfight Fails To Live Up to the Billing

“Y’all must have forgot,” but Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is still arguably the greatest boxer today. The four-weight world champion schooled Jermell Charlo in a battle of undisputed champions on Saturday. Sure, the Alvarez vs Charlo betting odds were moderately in favor of Canelo as a -450 favorite. But many expected Charlo to put up a fight and even pull off the upset. But it was Canelo from start to finish as he made yet another “superfight” look lopsided.

Boxing Results: Alvarez Puts on Best Performance in Ages

Hindsight is 20/20. But all the hot boxing picks for Charlo look frigid now. Alvarez was simply too good. The super welterweight, despite all his bravado before the fight, had no answers for Alvarez. Not only did Charlo lose 10 of the 12 rounds, he looked gunshy for most of the fight. Even Terence Crawford, the undisputed welterweight champion who was in attendance, mocked him on social media.

Charlo could not get anything going. He barely hit Alvarez and spent most of the 12 rounds defending. Alvarez was aggressive beginning from Round 2. In fact, one could suggest he was trying hard to knock Charlo out. One thing is for sure: Alvarez was out there to prove a point.

Following many superfights in which boxers like Crawford and Naoya Inoue reached new heights and became toasts of the town, Alvarez wanted to remind everyone he was still there. And he was still in his prime. With his 60th pro win, Alvarez continues to make a case as the greatest boxer of his era.

He proved to be one of the best boxing bets for Sep. 30. Those who bet him straight or parlayed him would have enjoyed his sweet line at -450. Alvarez looked more like a -1000 favorite as he proved that the underdog was outmatched.

Alvarez’s Performance in Line with Other Stars’

Alvarez put on a dominant performance and he needed to after the results of the other superfights. Crawford, Inoue, and Gervonta Davis all knocked their opponents out. Even Teofimo Lopez upset Josh Taylor, a former undisputed champion, around the same time.

Crawford destroyed Errol Spence Jr. to become the undisputed welterweight champion late in July. It was the undisputed bout everyone had wanted for over five years. The boxing odds had Crawford slightly favored at around -150. But now, the early lines on the rematch have Crawford at -550 due to the one-sided showing.

There might be boxing news on a potential bout between Alvarez and Crawford. There are three weight classes between them and many might say the weight difference is too much. But it’s a potential fight.

And a few days before Crawford whooped Spence, Inoue boosted his already expensive stock by dismantling Stephen Fulton. The Japanese prodigy was a -350 favorite and won the unified super bantamweight belts to become only the second first four-division champion in his country.

Now, Inoue is a whopping -1300 favorite to become the undisputed champion in a unification bout with Marlon Tapales. Expect this to materialize late this year or early in next year’s boxing schedule.

As for Davis, he dispatched Ryan Garcia with ease in the spring. Davis closed as a -180 favorite as many bettors sided with the underdog. But come fight time, it was clear that Davis was several notches above Garcia as he continually hurt him until the referee had to intervene.

More Superfights to Come

Alvarez-Charlo is not the last we’ll see of a highly publicized bout between pound-for-pound greats. There are a few already coming this 2023 led by the hotly anticipated rematch between two undisputed women’s champions: Chantelle Cameron and Katie Taylor. Unlike the men’s bouts, their first fight was highly competitive. And the odds, now slightly favoring Cameron, should be no different.

Another mega bout features heavyweight champion Tyson Fury boxing former UFC champion Francis Ngannou this October. While boxing purists scoff at this matchup, it features the best heavyweights on the planet. Fury is a -1350 favorite.

And last but not least, undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney takes on super lightweight champion Regis Prograis. Haney is favored at -350 as he looks to become a two-division champion.
