Boxing July 2022 Look Ahead

Number of Championship Bouts Dot Calendar

The biggest boxing matches may not be until August, but July does more than a tremendous job in warming it up. Plenty of championship bouts line the calendar and the boxing odds
forecast that a few belts may change hands. Along with all of the MMA events, expect July to keep fight fans busy.

1. Breidis vs Opetaia

  • Date: July 2nd
  • Venue: Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre, Queensland, Australia

Mairis Briedis (28-1-0, 20 KOs), the world’s best active cruiserweight, defends his IBF and The Ring titles against the unbeaten Jai Opetaia (21-0-0, 17 KOs). The champ will command plenty of bets online as he should open as the favorite, though Opetaia has the home crowd advantage.

2. Chisora vs Pulev 2

  • Date: July 9th

It’s the rematch six years in the making. Derek Chisora (32-12-0, 23 KOs) will settle the score with Kubrat Pulev (29-2-0, 14 KOs) following the latter’s contentious win in 2016. Even though Chisora has dropped three consecutive bouts, there is still an appetite for this rematch. Chisora is the underdog, as he was in the original.

3. Magsayo vs Vargas

The WBC featherweight title is on the line when champion Mark Magsayo (24-0-0, 16 KOs) meets Rey Vargas (35-0-0, 22 KOs) in Texas. Both boxers are unbeaten with a collection of notable scalps on their record. Vargas is moving up in weight and could be the slight underdog here when checking the sportsbook.

4. Barboza vs Zorrilla

Blue-chip prospects collide and someone’s unbeaten record is on the line when Arnold Barboza Jr. (26-0-0, 10 KOs) meets Danielito Zorrilla (16-0-0, 12 KOs), aka “El Zorro”. This is a massive step up for El Zorro. who can break into the top 10 with a win. However, Barboza should be the favorite here as he aims to be next in line for a title shot.

5. Garcia vs Fortuna

Ryan Garcia (22-0-0, 18 KOs) versus Javier Fortuna isn’t for any titles, but it may be the biggest fight of the month. Garcia is the controversial yet popular young star and has made a name for himself with his viral videos and call-outs. Fortuna (36-3-1, 2 NC, 25 KOs) is a grizzled veteran who should test the 22-year-old even if he is a sizable underdog.

6. Gonzalez vs Dogboe

  • Date: July 23rd

Two-time world title challenger Joet Gonzalez (25-2-0, 15 KOs) takes on former WBO junior featherweight champ Isaac Dogboe (23-2-0, 15 KOs). This is for another crack at a world title — the WBC featherweight title. With Magsayo fighting Vargas, the winner of Gonzalez-Dogboe will be taking on the winner of that bout.

7. Gonzalez vs Angulo

  • Date: July 28th
  • Venue: Fantasy Springs Resort & Casino, Indio, CA

We catch a glimpse of a future champion as Jousce Gonzalez (12-0-1, 11 KOs) main events against Jose Angulo (14-2-0, 7 KOs). Gonzalez should be a large favorite in this bout as he gets a confidence-building victory to set him up with bigger fights down his career.

8. Garcia vs Benavidez

  • Date: July 30th
  • Venue: Barclays Center, Brooklyn, NY

Danny Garcia (36-3-0, 21 KOs) returns for the first time since losing a hard-fought battle to Errol Spence Jr. He gets Jose Benavidez Jr. (27-1-1, 18 KOs), who has not won a fight since getting knocked out by Terence Crawford back in 2018. Expect Garcia to be considerable chalk in this spot.
