Gill Gets Title Shot
Guerfi Defends EBU Featherweight Belt
The O2 Arena in London will be rocking on Saturday as Jordan Gill looks to get his career back on track against Karim Guerfi.
With the EBU European featherweight title on the line, Gill has plenty to prove against a dangerous fighter in Guerfi (30-5).
Boxing betting markets expect Gill to emerge victorious, but it could be a closely contested title fight.
Head Clash Halts Momentum
Gill had his momentum halted by a doctor’s stoppage when he fought Alan Castillo.
It was a blip on the radar for the 27-year-old, who rebounded from a loss to Mario Tinoco with three consecutive wins.
He put away two low-level fighters with unanimous decision victories before beating Cesar Juarez at Wembley Arena, which holds him in good stead.
The cut happened in December, so he has kept the residual fitness from that fight. He was bitterly disappointed with the result, but he has a chance to redeem the draw.
“I’m gutted to say the least, but we move forward,” Gill told Cambs Times. “Thanks to everyone that traveled up to Liverpool or tuned in; I know it’s not the result we wanted, but this is boxing.”
The sportsbook has Gill, who is of Indian heritage, to win comfortably. He’s proud of his Indian heritage and credits the support as a “big thing.”
“It’s exciting times. We are pushing on toward some top fighters in the world, towards a world title shot, and the Indian support is a really big thing for me,”Gill said. “I have a lot of Indian fans. Sikhs and Gujaratis and everybody else get in touch with me and wish me well.”
We expect Gill to fight well against Guerfi, who has struggled with consistency throughout his career. Boxing fights are often won in the opening rounds, so he should come out strong.
Guerfi Lacks Finishing Punch
Karim Guerfi is a talented fighter in his own right, but a deep dive into his record raises some concerns.
The Frenchman keeps losing his bigger fights, including a first-round knockout loss to Lee McGregor last year. He also lost to Michael Dasmarinas in the fourth round in 2018, so he needs to improve.
Of his 30 wins, he has won by knockout on only nine occasions, so there is a distinct lack of power. That will be a problem against Gill, who has some serious power in his hands.
However, he won the EBU European featherweight title when beating Andoni Gago as a huge betting online underdog, so he has upset potential.
He stepped up two weight divisions for the unanimous decision victory, so he could be dangerous with more weight added.
“Thanks to all of my team, my trainer and my management MTK Global. It is difficult to prepare for a European title fight on just three weeks, but we succeeded and I hope I made the French and Algerian people proud,” Guerfi said.
A different challenge is being presented to the 34-year-old Guerfi, which will make it harder. We expect him to struggle in the early rounds and Gill could score an early knockout victory to claim the belt.
