It’s sad, but true. One of the greatest heavyweights of the last two decades has hung up his gloves – for now, at least. The former heavyweight king dropped the bombshell news via an Instagram video, thus leaving the boxing community, as a whole, in shock!

It’s been a blast. I’ve loved every single minute of it, and I’m going to end with this: Dick Turpin wore a mask. God Bless everybody, see you on the other side,” Fury commented in the aforementioned video.

However, while those close to Fury fully support his decision, skepticism regarding the retirement video is strong because it’ll be the fourth time during Fury’s career that he’s “called it a day.” As a result, the boxing community has mixed reactions, and we’ll take a closer look at those varied responses today.

Frank Warren Wishes Fury ‘A Lovely Retirement’

Naturally, as Fury’s retirement dominates boxing rumors, a plethora of prominent figures within the sport of boxing have shared their thoughts. One of whom is Frank Warren, Fury’s famed promoter of Queensbury Promotions.

God bless him,” Warren told Boxing on TNT. “If that’s what he wants to do, that’s what he should do. He’s made a lot of money, had a fantastic career, and is probably the joint-best heavyweight of this century. He’s been in some magnificent fights. I’ve loved every minute of it, and I hope all the fans also have. He’s been brilliant for British and world boxing, and I wish him a lovely retirement and to enjoy his life.”

While we’re seeing a pretty straightforward, expected response to Fury’s retirement from his promoter Warren, not everyone is convinced The Gypsy King has put a stamp on his career.

Warren’s Rival Promoter, Eddie Hearn, Isn’t So Convinced

Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing is no stranger to letting his thoughts be known, especially regarding his rival promoter Warren, and he’s one of many who’s been questioning the legitimacy behind Fury’s retirement.

And, rightfully so…

This isn’t the first time Fury has “retired.” In fact, we’ve seen the Gypsy King announce his exit from the sport on three occasions: once in 2022, also in 2017, and first in 2013. He did, of course, eventually return to the ring, and that’s why this week’s news has seen many pessimistic thoughts, including Hearn, come out of the woodwork.

Tyson Fury is listed at +3300 boxing betting odds to win BBC 2025 Sports Personality of the Year.

Eddie Hearn’s Anthony Joshua Theory

Post-Fury announcement, during a discussion with IFL TV, Hearn shared a theory that involves one of his most famed fighters, Anthony Joshua:

If you ever want to return and get the max [payout], you must retire first, right? Someone then has to bring you out of retirement.

If that’s the last we see of Tyson Fury, then good luck to him. I doubt it personally, but whatever he chooses to do, much respect to him.

I think he’ll want to fight again; I think he will get bored, and he will know the British public wants to see the AJ fight. My personal belief is that we’ll see him in the ring again. If not, then good luck to the man.”

It’s no secret that pugilist diehards have long desired to see Fury fight Joshua in an all-British showdown, and Hearn makes it quite apparent that he still believes the fight will happen despite the retirement news.

Hearn added: “If he wants to retire, there’s nothing we can do about it. If he’s up for the fight – the biggest fight in the sport – then great. My gut feeling is we’ll see it.

Of course, Hearn couldn’t conclude the conversation without goading Fury a little: “AJ wants that fight. Maybe Fury hasn’t got it in him anymore and doesn’t have the heart for it. If he hasn’t, then he should retire.”

Shakur Stevenson Calls “No Cap”

Hearn isn’t alone in his belief that Fury will retire before fighting AJ, but one fellow professional and the current WBC lightweight titleholder, Shakur Stevenson, believes the Gypsy King is ready for retirement, as he shared his thoughts on a Monday afternoon edition of “The Ariel Helwani Show.”

Nah, I’m not calling cap,” Stevenson commented. “I think he’s ready to give it up, and I believe he had a tremendous career. He is one of the best heavyweights to do it, and I respect him.

I think he made a lot of money. I think he’s in it for the biggest and best fights, but he made so much money that he can sit down, chill, and relax.”

Boxing Fans Aren’t Convinced

Boxing can be an unscrupulous industry in which self-promotion is nearly as significant as the combat itself. Therefore, it’s no surprise that Fury’s supporters and boxing fans believe he is merely generating interest in a potential fight against Joshua.

One fan on social media wrote:

“Tactics to gain momentum for the AJ fight.”

Another commented:

“See you in 6 months, mate.”

A third added:

“Fury versus AJ announced within the next six months.”

Unsurprisingly, fans also poked fun by referencing Fury’s past retirements:

“Ahh, it’s the annual retirement post. Is it that time of the year already.”

Another joked:

“Translation: Turki Alalshikh, I need $150 million to come out of retirement, and AJ needs to kiss my ring.”

A third said:

“We all know you’re not retiring.”

Joshua Wants the Fight

It doesn’t take a marketing genius to know that a Fury vs. Joshua bout would be a commercial success even though both Englishmen are riding devastating losses. Fury, with two consecutive losses to Oleksandr Usyk, is still in a greater position than AJ, who was knocked out cold by Daniel Dubois in 2024.

The fans want it, boxing betting lines would garner significant interest, and promoters would love it. Still, Anthony Joshua himself has made his intentions clear regarding a fight with Fury during a recent talk with Ring Magazine:

It’s a fight I want to see because I am a boxing fan. Everyone asks me [about this fight] when I am in the gym. I ain’t got many years ahead of me. I want to leave the game with a bang and make an impact.”

What do you think? Is Fury talking smack? Or will the Gypsy King truly sail off into the sunset and enjoy his riches?
