Jake Paul vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

The YouTuber Looks to Cement His Boxing Legacy Against the Son of a Legend

The Hype Is Real

On June 28, live from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, the greatest prospect in professional boxing returns… His name is ‘The Problem Child’ Jake Paul.

That’s enough jokes for today’s boxing news, but in all seriousness, Paul is back in action, and his opponent, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., is a credible name in the boxing world when compared to some of the social media stars’ past opponents.

With that said, there’s always some good, bad, and ugly, so let’s get into Paul vs. Chavez Jr.!

Paul vs. Chavez Jr.: The Good

Jake Paul isn’t fighting a retired MMA fighter with limited boxing experience. Better yet, he’s fighting a former full-time professional with a 54-6-1 record who isn’t a grandad amongst boxing rumors, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

It’s undeniable, Chavez Jr. will be Paul’s most challenging test to date in terms of skill, and this has to be a good direction, right?

I know, it doesn’t have the same hype or magnitude of past fights Paul has been involved in, but at least the former Disney Channel star, 28, is seemingly taking a more serious direction in a sport where he’s proclaimed he’ll be a champion one day.

Title aspirations for Paul fell far away, and for the most part, fans of the sport have been aggravated by his venture in the ring, which began in 2018. Defeating MMA icons, no-name pro boxers, and the widely revered Mike Tyson, who was 58 at the time, while proclaiming to be a future champion has pissed off a lot of people, but it worked… And by that, I mean it’s drawn eyes while also giving Paul an 11-1 record and an impressive highlight reel.

Now, a win over Chavez Jr. might tip him closer to challenging for a world title… as crazy as they might sound.

Oh, and this isn’t speculation… The chairman of the WBC has already stated that a win for Paul would earn him an official spot on the rankings!

The Problem Child vs. JC Jr.: The Bad

On the other hand, a defeat to Chavez Jr., who is undeniably the most skilful opponent Paul has faced to date, might have implications capable of resetting his past achievements.

The Problem Child has already received constant flak for his opponent selection and his boxing schedule, and the bullying of a 58-year-old Mike Tyson was the icing on the cake that took Paul’s hatred to a whole new level.

When you look at Paul’s only loss, it was to Tommy Fury, a serious test against an opponent of a similar age and height, and he failed. Now, another serious test awaits, but with the only difference being that Chavez Jr. is far from his prime, and is almost 40 years old.

It’s not quite the age of Tyson per se, but losing to Chavez Jr., who hasn’t fought a legitimate pro bout since 2021 and has also lost to Anderson Silva, a man Paul defeated, would ultimately throw the Ohio native right back down the pecking order as nothing but a former YouTuber living in a dream world.

Jake Paul vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.: The Ugly

The boxing fight odds are unfavorable, with Paul sitting at -600 odds as the favorite, because Chavez Jr. is a former WBC middleweight champion who, at the time in 2012, held a 42-0-1 record.

Unfortunately, the sportsbooks aren’t just setting traps because once you put the microscope on Mexico’s former champ, you’ll notice some huge inconsistencies that align with the Paul team and their ability to handpick winnable fights for the Problem Child.

With 54 wins on his record, Chavez Jr. appears to be a force, but the majority of these wins came early in his career. Arguably, he left his prime fighting years back in 2013, and then look at his most recent defeat… Anderson Silva in 2021. Silva was 46 and hadn’t boxed for 14 years, yet we watched him take a split decision victory from Chavez Jr. To add, Paul dropped Silva and won a unanimous decision over the former UFC legend just over a year later.

Maths and combat sports can sometimes act like oil and water, as neither is guaranteed to favor one fighter over the other. However, there’s a huge possibility that this fight will become ugly for Chavez Jr., but also give Paul some false credibility due to the fact that he’s fighting a legit former world champion with skills.

It’s that time again, a Paul boxing match tonight, and the potential risk is implied, but it could be nothing more than smoke and mirrors created by the perfect equation. Combat sports math isn’t typically a go-to, but if anyone has mastered the art of falsifying the stats, it would be the Problem Child, Jake Paul.
