1. Canelo Alvarez vs Edgar Berlanga: There Are Levels To This

Sadly, Mexico’s pound-for-pound king made boxing news when he was stripped of the IBF super middleweight strap after refusing a mandatory challenger in William Scull. Despite the politics of boxing and Canelo’s undisputed status being removed, he still holds the WBC, WBA, WBO, and Ring Magazine straps, and they’ll be on full display for Mexico’s Independence Day celebrations this Saturday.

The opponent? Well, it might not be the feud fans want to see. Still, Edgar Berlanga is another undefeated up-and-comer – like Canelo’s last opponent – who’ll be desperate to protect his 0 and propel himself into the spotlight on the back of Canelo’s name.

I’m not going to sit here and create a false narrative that Berlanga holds a great chance of causing an upset because to be quite frank… he doesn’t! There’s a reason why we’re looking at a -2000 moneyline price on Canelo, and that’s because there are levels to this shi*, and they’re levels that Berlanga has yet to reach.

Why the Over Makes Sense

While Berlanga held the reputation of being a menacing power puncher (16 consecutive round-one knockouts), he can enter the ring with a wild approach, and his head-hunting style hasn’t paid off in the big leagues where he’s now won via decision in 5 of his last 6 appearances. Likewise, Canelo’s move to super middleweight hasn’t displayed the knockout prowess we once saw, although he’s still one of the best counterpunchers in boxing history and has notably excelled versus power punchers like Berlanga in the past.

To beat Canelo, you must outperform him at an incredibly technical level, e.g., Bivol, Mayweather, Golovkin. Berlanga hasn’t shown us he’s that guy, and outside of a puncher’s chance, it’ll be a long night for the Puerto Rican underdog.

However, from a betting standpoint, the over/under sitting at 8 ½ rounds does feel low. I was expecting to see 10 ½ at near evens at BetUS Sportsbook. Still, it would seem the bookies are gifting us when you consider Canelo hasn’t won by KO/TKO in four years, as the super middleweight division has evidently been more challenging for his power. Not forgetting, he’s barely been wobbled during his career, let alone knocked out.

In addition, Berlanga has never been knocked out for all his defensive flaws, and going the distance has been commonplace. Of course, statistics don’t tell the complete story. However, an aging Canelo whose footwork and defensive mindset are still elite versus a youngster who’s never been knocked out and has years less wear and tear doesn’t scream knockout to me. At the very least, I envision this fight reaching the championship rounds.

2. Erislandy Lara vs Danny Garcia: Durability

Several years too late? Perhaps… But will you switch off the television when Erislandy Lara and Danny Garcia start to trade leather in the ring? I doubt it very much.

Despite being 41 years old, Lara proves that being the oldest champion in pro boxing isn’t as difficult as it may sound. Since shifting from super welterweight to 160 pounds, he’s snatched the WBA crown and has been his same old self with three consecutive knockout wins, all via his blistering straight left.

That same punishing straight left will be in action this Saturday, but will it have the same effect versus the ever-durable, former two-division champion Danny Garcia?

Garcia, 36, is no spring chicken himself, and a two-year layoff coupled with his debut at middleweight does fly a couple of red flags. However, he did manage to get through a much younger Jose Benavidez Jr. at 156 pounds in his last appearance. If that same version of “Swift” turns up, perhaps the ring rust and extra weight won’t be a difference-maker compared to an aging, slower version of Lara.

Going the Distance

Dare I say it, but the 41-year-old version of Lara has looked more dangerous than ever of late. His footwork has slowed, and he’s not delivering the same output he once used to, but his composed and patient nature inside the ring has been crafting some of the nastiest power punches and KO wins of his career.

There is, however, a kicker. Garcia is the most accomplished opponent Lara has fought in years. The Philly native isn’t a natural middleweight, and he’ll be debuting in the weight class following a two-year layoff, but his expertise and the level of competition he’s fought are much higher.

Garica should have enough output to land more strikes, but a huge size disadvantage will be less familiar territory. He hasn’t scored a knockout since 2019, so he’ll be planning to go the distance, and with Lara’s newfound patience, it might not be enough to find the kill shot versus a much more seasoned and durable opponent.

For all of their in-ring skills and decades of experience, a combined record of 67-6-3 has never seen either man suffer a knockout defeat, and I don’t envision this statistic changing come Saturday. There’s a small price to pay, but backing the over 10 ½ rounds feels like the perfect price booster for your boxing parlay predictions.
