Joe Cordina, a former super-featherweight champion of the International Boxing Federation, fights Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz, a lightweight from Mexico, in a 10-round match for the vacant WBO Global Lightweight Title at Manchester Arena on Saturday.

This bout is Cordina’s (17-1, 9 KOs) way of returning to the 135-pound class, where he once competed and won titles for the British and Commonwealth. With his 2024 season derailed by an injury that prevented him from fighting American superstar Shakur Stevenson, the 33-year-old Welshman is eager to get back on track.

Now Cordina must contend with Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz, a younger and more formidable opponent (17-1, 13 KOs) who possesses a frightening knockout record but has never been challenged at the elite level.

The Sweet Science: Cordina vs Gonzalez Betting Preview and Skillset Breakdown

Having squandered the opportunity to compete against Shakur Stevenson to losing his unbeaten record and IBF/IBO World Super Featherweight titles to Cacace last year, Cordina’s bounce back to prove he’s capable of competing with the elite was never going to be easy. However, Eddie Hearn has done a great job of booking his fighter’s return fight because on paper, Mexico’s Gonzalez looks legit.

Hearn’s magic, however, isn’t going to fool us boxing purists. Gonzalez is young, hits hard, and he holds an identical record to the Welshman with even more knockout wins, but Saturday will mark his first time fighting outside of Mexico, as the youngster’s experience is about to get a rude awakening to how the top dogs do it, hence the current lopsided boxing odds.

Cordina isn’t a world-beater when it comes to punching power, but this defensively aware, precise hitter is a technical wiz who can utilize his jab, control the distance, and outwork his less-experienced foe with feints and smooth footwork.

Gonzalez is Mexican, and yes, his fighting style mirrors many of his countrymen before him. He’s going to pressure, look to meet in the center of the ring, and look to dominate with power punches and zero fear. This will be the biggest fight of his career, and with nothing to lose, he will pose a danger despite being a huge underdog in boxing predictions.

How to Bet on Cordina vs. Gonzalez: Best Bet for July 7

With jabs up high and low, alongside finer details such as his feinting ability and footwork, the more technical and experienced Cordina should have no problem with an experience level such as Gonzalez’s.

The youngster brings a fresh face and knockout power to the AO Arena, but regarding technical ability, he’s simply a level below the former Olympic medalist.

More worrisome for the newcomer was his inability to survive against Hector Garcia Dolores in boxing news, a fellow Mexican who knocked him out and has since compiled an unimpressive 9-10 record. Said fight was below the lightweight limit, so, can you imagine the punishment that Cordina will be able to put on him?

From a boxing picks perspective, the juiced moneyline is unapproachable, but as Cordina often finds his groove halfway through the fight, expecting him to overwhelm the inexperienced foe to collect a TKO stoppage between rounds 6-10 is a likely outcome and also holds excellent value.

Bet on Cordina to win by KO/TKO (-355)
