Davies vs. Masoud Betting Preview

Liam Davies: British, European, and World!

You cannot deny the excitement of the super-bantamweight division right now, spearheaded by the formidable Naoya Inoue. As Japan owns the landscape, British boxing isn’t far behind, as we Brits undoubtedly have some of the best up-and-coming 122-pounders in the rankings, including the latest IBO titlist, Liam Davies!

Davies’ evolution has been a thing of beauty… He’s gone from British to European and now World champion as the Telford local keeps going from strength to strength with each passing fight. You might think we’re all about sipping tea and eating crumpets, but no kettle can boil the in-ring heat Davies provides.

Shabaz “Maverick” Masoud: Shropshire Nostalgia

Under the tutelage of Ben Davison, the famed coach who’s cornered Anthony Joshua and trained “The Gypsy King” Tyson Fury, Shabaz Masoud has the opportunity to steal the limelight from an old foe in Birmingham on Saturday. Given his unblemished track record, which presents 13 straight wins and two WBA Inter-Continental title wins as a pro, he’s got a damn good shot at doing so!

When Shabaz Masoud steps into the ring with Liam Davies this weekend, it will bring back fond memories of his amateur days. Both fighters competed for Shropshire-based boxing clubs, and Masoud won two encounters with the now-world champ.

I must stress, however, thatthose boys are now men, and a lot has changed since those amateur boxing days. This rivalry has been reignited on a world stage, but one factor does remain… There will be no love lost between these English rivals.

Davies Speaks on Exacting Revenge

When discussing his history with Masoud, Davies let it be known that he’s out for revenge, no matter how long it’s been since they last tussled:

“He’s beat me twice, so, of course, I want revenge,” Davies commented during an interview with boxing news outlets. “I was in a bad place then, but I’m a grown man now. That kid they fought back then would have never been in this position. Trust me, it’ll be a different fight this time.”

Davies v Masoud: Skillset Comparison

Masoud’s in-ring IQ and technical skills aren’t to be overlooked in this bout. There’s a great chancethat, as a ring technician, he’ll have a slight edge over Davies in the early goings of the contest. He’s such a skillful, sharp puncher who can switch-hit at any given moment, and he will undoubtedly prefer this fight at range.

However, Masoud didn’t look great in his recent and most notable career win over Jose Sanmartin. He looked dumbfounded in certain moments, and while Sanmartin is a commendable hurdle to jump, he’s far from the dangers Davies will bring.

The difference-maker could be Davies’s versatility. He can fight on his back foot or the front foot. Whether it’s at long, mid, or close range, he finds a way to make his hands work, and most importantly, he’ll be the hardest hitter Masoud has ever faced.

Davies’s evolution as a boxer is what’s most impressive about his skillset. Looking back at his early fights, the difference between his newfound aggression makes him a threat in the knockout department. Although he’s capable of winning via points, those same brawling scenarios alongside a “dog” mentality have seen him collect just as many decision victories as he has on the scorecards.

  • Davies is undefeated as aprofessional (16-0)
  • Masoud is undefeated as a professional (13-0)
  • Davies has won 3 of his last 6 bouts by decision
  • Masoud has gone the distance in two consecutive pro bouts

How to Bet on Davies vs Masoud: Best Bet Goes to Davies

Masoud is a proven pugilistwho can undeniably box to a high standard; it feels like Davies is a step up in competition way too early in his professional career. Their amateur beef is irrelevant, with one man proven on the world stage while the other (Masoud) is just arriving. Barely getting through Sanmartin should be a concern for bettors. While I wouldn’t be surprised at an evenly-matched clash early on in the contest, Davies’s power and adaptability will shine through in the second half.

From a betting perspective, there’s a clear A-side here, and that’s Davies. The boxing odds lean towards a knockout, priced at -105, but I see the greater value in this long-standing English feud going the distance, with the defending champ retaining and having his hand raised, whose pressure and power late in the fight will catch the judge’s attention, making my boxing prediction in favor of a decision win.

Bet This Pick: Davies To Win by Decision (+240)
