Naoya Inoue: ‘The Monster’ is Human After All

With world title reigns in four weight classes and two-division undisputed champ status, many critics (including myself) consider Naoya Inoue the world’s No.1 pound-for-pound greatest boxer. In his first 26 pro bouts, he’d accomplished all of the aforementioned achievements and done so convincingly with 23 knockouts.

We started to believe the man nicknamed “The Monster” was genuinely an imaginary creature from out of this world until Luis Nery humanized the Japanese superstar in his 27th pro appearance earlier this year.

Don’t get me wrong, Inoue still won the contest, and it was a lobsided affair, but a brief scare ensued in the opening round after Nery dropped “The Monster.” It was a moment of disbelief, but we didn’t have time to ponder. Inoue revealed another layer to his game… durability and the will to fight through adversity and dominate.

So, while many can view Inoue’s first moment of weakness as a flaw, it should actually make the monster scarier than ever for his foes because he once again proved to be unstoppable, albeit in a slightly different manner.

TJ Doheny: An Irishman in Japan

TJ Doheny will be the fighting pride of Ireland this Tuesday, especially if he can do the unthinkable and deliver Inoue his first-ever professional defeat on hostile territory. The Irishman is no stranger to gold himself; he’s the former IBF super bantamweight champ, and although his pro tenure has involved multiple setbacks, the 37-year-old is a crafty veteran southpaw who’s just won three consecutive fights in Japan via knockout.

Everyone will write Doheny off, but this Irishman has become accustomed to success on Japanese soil. Many onlookers won’t realize he’s already collected four victories in Japan, and a trio of knockouts in The Land of the Rising Sun is precisely what’s brought him to the undisputed dance this weekend.

What Doheny’s Manager Said

TJ Doheny’s manager, Mike Altamura, has spotted weaknesses in Naoya’s game and believes his fighter can exploit them:

He’s [Inoue] very fast with his feet, but he doesn’t move his head a lot, though,” Altamura told boxing news outlet The Ring. “I think there will be opportunities there for TJ to counter him and walk him into shots, but he’s got to be really switched on to the game plan.

Inoue vs. Doheny: Skillset Breakdown

We can sit here and detail the underdog’s potential to cause an upset, but let’s not beat around the bush, shall we… This is nothing more than a showcase fight for Inoue. It’s a route to keeping Japan’s biggest combat sports star active. While Doheny isn’t a pushover, he just isn’t talented enough to overcome the bantamweight G.O.A.T, especially when he’s three years shy of turning forty.

Yes, there are some glaring differences between Doheny and Inoue’s latest two victims, Nery and Marlon Tapales, including the fact that he’s a lifelong super bantamweight and could undeniably be the most physically imposing and durable foe the undisputed champ has faced in this weight class.

However, do size and durability help Doheny overcome the pound-for-pound great’s destructive power, speed, and footwork? No, they don’t! It’s not a matter of if but when. Inoue presents many different looks as an offensive savage; he will adapt if necessary and eventually find a viable path to success.

The Irishman has power, he’s durable, and his size could certainly assist him, but Inoue has now proven he can take shots from a significantly higher level of competition than Doheny and fight back even harder. It might take longer than the over/under total of 4½ rounds suggests, but “The Monster” will add another knockout to his resume, and hopefully, Top Rank can arrange something special that boxing betting fans can enjoy at the end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025.

  • Inoue is a top 3 ranked pound-for-pound fighter in every rankings list
  • Doheny has lost 4 of his previous 10 pro bouts
  • Inoue has won his previous 8 championship bouts by KO/TKO
  • Doheny has never been knocked out

Inoue vs. Dohney From a Betting Perspective

Inoue’s moneyline price of -15000, while extravagant, is expected. Some helpless soul will probably lay $15,000 to win $100, but we aren’t about to make such a ridiculous wager, so how do we approach a betting line that’s attached with so much juice?

It’s always risky to support the over when Inoue is competing; he’s finished a string of elite-level opponents in the first, second, and third rounds, but you’ll notice the majority of these early stoppages stem from lower weight classes.

With three fights at 122lbs, Inoue’s knockouts have come no sooner than the sixth. The maths doesn’t always add up, but evidently, his power at super bantamweight isn’t as potent in the early goings, and considering Doheny’s position as a natural 122-pounder, I like the Irishman’s chances to survive, at least, until the sixth round.

Doheny has never been knocked out; he’s Irish; what do you expect? And while I expect him to suffer his first KO defeat, he won’t go out without a fight, thus making the over 4 ½ rounds at -115 an excellent set of boxing odds and a method to finding value in an otherwise overly juiced event.

Bet This Pick: Inoue, Dohney Over 4 ½ Rounds (-115)
