Isaac Cruz is one of the more promising boxers in the lightweight division, having nearly the same amount of fights as Gamboa, despite being 17 years his junior. His last fight was for the WBA lightweight \championship, a loss via unanimous decision (see above) against the champion Gervonta Davis. Cruz has a 22-2-1 record with 15 knockouts and 60% knockout percentage. He’s not lacking confidence, but needs to be prepared against one of the truly experienced fighters in the division.
Gamboa Needs His Experience
Yuriorkis Gamboa is 30-4-0 (18 knockouts), but hasn’t fought at the same level since the Biogenesis scandal in which he was involved. Starting out 23-0, he’s lost in four of his last 11 fights, becoming less active. Now a 40-year-old, there’s a two-inch reach and 1 ½-inch height advantage.
He’s on a two-fight losing streak, a 12th-round TKO to Gervonta Davis as well as a unanimous decision loss to Devin Haney. The 17-month layoff could be an asset entering this fight, as his body is healthy. Getting into the ring at 40 could make it difficult, however.
