Kid Galahad’s Title Looks in Safe Keeping

Kid Galahad puts his 28-1 record and the IBF featherweight title on the line against the experienced Kiko Martinez on Saturday.

The British 31-year-old lost the title when beaten by Josh Warrington in 2019, but reclaimed the vacant belt.

Favorite Has a Point to Prove

It hasn’t been smooth sailing for Kid Galahad, who might be one of the best featherweights in the world, but he’s not squeaky clean.

He served an 18-month suspension for doping from 2014-16, but since that ban, he has lost only one fight to Warrington.

The titleholder, who has 17 knockouts, believes going through that ban has made him mentally tougher.

“They were hard times, but I’m mentally a tougher person because of it. I continued training every single day. I didn’t get a job and I was out for 18 months,” Galahad told ESPN.

“I put my eggs all in one basket a long time ago. It was either boxing or getting involved in crime. I had to make boxing work and [promoter] Eddie Hearn has given me opportunities. I had to keep believing when I was out.”

There is little doubting the class edge Galahad has over Martinez, but he’s not overlooking the experience of his opponent. He’s a former world champion for a reason, so he’s not taking the +750 underdog cheaply.

“Martinez has been at a high level for a long time and he has fought some top fighters like Leo Santa Cruz, Josh Warrington, Carl Frampton and he’s a former world champion,” Galahad added.

The sportsbook has Galahad at -1600, which is an extremely short line. He deserves to be well-favored to win, and he’ll be looking to make a statement with a knockout victory.

Is Martinez Going Through the Motions?

It has been four years since Kiko Martinez fought Josh Warrington for the WBC International featherweight title. He lost via majority decision, and he has only two three-star fights since.

Saturday’s bout will be his third, and he might struggle with the sudden rise in class. The 35-year-old easily took care of Jayro Duran in Barcelona two months ago, but it’s a fight he should have ended before the final bell.

His most recent knockout victory came against Noe Martinez Raygoza, who is 23-10-2. It was his biggest fight since facing Gary Allen Russell Jr in Brooklyn, which ended in Martinez hitting the canvas in the fifth round.

He believes he can win the fight, despite Galahad being one of the trickiest fighters to navigate.

“[Kid Galahad] has a difficult boxing style, changing his stance and fighting [from] orthodox or southpaw,” said Martinez.

“I will try to make some adjustments in [my] fight plan and surprise him.“I am in a very good moment. I am a veteran. People think that I am like 50 years old [because I have been around so long], but I made my pro debut at 18. Now I feel very strong and very experienced. I can win this fight.”

Experience can make a difference in the ring, but we think Martinez will be happy to secure his pay day. Winning a title at his age would be great, but it seems unrealistic to expect him to land the telling blow.

Pick

Bettors will have to take short odds for Galahad, but we can’t overlook his excellent chances of winning.

He will be pumped to fight in front of a home crowd in Sheffield, and betting online markets could have framed him as a -2000 favorite.

He is worth including in your boxing parlay bets for the weekend.

Pick: Kid Galahad -1600
