Sivenathi Nontshinga: A Young South African Savage
Times are changing, and in boxing, we no longer have to wait for up-and-coming talent to collect a 20-0 padded record before gyms and promoters are ready and willing to set their fighters out in the wild.
This sentiment couldn’t be truer than when discussing South Africa’s Sivenathi Nontshinga. Aged 25 years old, this savage knockout artist has already boxed in Mexico twice, where he’s lifted two world championships, and with his balls in his hand, he took on Adrian Curiel with just 12 pro bouts to his name. Sure, the Curiel result didn’t pan out, but guess who took a rematch three months later and battered the Mexican within 10 rounds to avenge his title defense?
The coveted unbeaten records and once-per-year defending champs are no longer respected in boxing as they once were; promoters know we get behind active fighters willing to challenge themselves, and zero stock will be lost in the process. And with another quick turnaround following his IBF title redemption in February, Nontshinga travels to hostile territory to take on one of Japan’s knockout-thirsty brutes, with the entire boxing community excited to see what he has in store.

Masamichi Yabuki: Japan… A Hotbed of Talent
With 16 wins and 15 knockouts, Masamichi Yabuki is just one of many Japanese fighters who are putting respect on the nation’s lower-weight boxing prowess. Yes, Japan is an absolute hotbed of talent. Honestly, Nontshinga would’ve had several worthy opponents for Saturday, but to decide on Yabuki is a risk. Although the Suzuka native did suffer a brutal knockout loss to fellow countryman Kenshiro Teraji, he enters his third world title bout behind three straight wins by knockout.
Can Nontshinga waltz into Yabuki’s backyard and dismantle one of Japan’s heaviest-hitting 108-pounders? Curiel proved his chin isn’t indestructible, and the Japanese standout only needs one. The 16-4 record doesn’t look pretty on paper, but don’t be quick to assume it’s a lopsided contest curated to boost the ‘Special One’ and his rise because heavy leather will be swinging from both sides.

Nontshinga vs. Yabuki Skillset Comparison: A Real Firefight!
Load up on protein, stock your belly with sushi pre-fight, and drag the champion into your world. This is precisely what Yabuki must do, as Nontshinga, who’s proved to be gun-shy at times, can wilt under pressure, and an aggressive pressure game is a factor that’s assisted Yabuki’s success to date. Should the Japanese fighter remain in the fight without much kickback, he’ll undoubtedly be the more live fighter to find a knockout as we know the champ can get frustrated, deter from the game plan, and get into a firefight.

For Nontshinga, it’d be wise to test the formerly injured achilles of Yabuki. Make the challenger move laterally and force him to chase you. We know Yabuki is half the fighter he is when moving off the back foot, and should the champ utilize his jab and play this one safe, his potential for success heightens. He should, however, avoid getting into a jabbing war because we know Yabuki doesn’t use his jab as a range finder; he’ll stab it viciously to set up a finishing blowor, even worse, finish the fight with it!
Yabuki often commits to big shots and leaves himself open. If the champion uses a possum approach and the fight reaches the second half, expect more mistakes to occur. This is where Nontshinga can truly take the lead and perhaps play with his food.
Both fighters are susceptible to damage, and Nontshinga must be careful. However, similar to the Curiel fight, should he play this fight behind a defensive approach and avoid a gunslinging war, it’ll be his to lose.

How to Bet on Nontshinga vs Yabuki
Casuals will be surprised at the relatively close boxing odds that place a -200 moneyline on Nontshinga, but if you know… you know! Yabuki is a dangerous man, and the oddsmakers are respecting this. That said, as the more active fighter, going against the ring rust and Achilles injury of Yabuki, it’s difficult to ignore the favorites chance of victory.
Overall, throughout their careers, the ‘Special One’ has displayed more diversity and all-around talent, whereas Yabuki has been nothing but grit and determination. While I wouldn’t suggest re-mortgaging the house to back the champ, I really do trust Colin Nathan to perfect a game plan for Nontshinga.
The defending IBF champion is more refinedandmore switched on, and due to the dangers of Yabuki’s power, this one could be a more technical and boring fight than we’re expecting. Yabuki’s best path to victory is through a firefight taking place, so the defending champ will be more than willing to keep this one clean, avoid the headhunting, and retain the belt by playing it safe, so to speak.
Don’t get mewrong, somebody’s head will fly, but it won’t be until the latter rounds when Yabuki’s forced to take more risks after getting technically beaten on, and the openings for Nontshinga gift him a knockout.

Nontshinga vs. Yabuki: Crystal Ball Betting Predictions
In this light flyweight championship bout, a quick rub of my crystal ball reveals that the South African man in Japan will upset onlookers by out-skilling and out-working their fighter. After playing possum and technically outperforming Yabuki, a ninth-round knockout will surface once the challenger fights behind frustration and leaves himself open to the counters.
