Nobody wants to trade heavy leather with Ortiz Jr. Still; if one man has the potential to match the American’s power, it would be Ukraine’s hard-hitting Serhii Bohachuk, who’ll defend his WBC super welterweight interim strap behind an equally impressive 95% knockout rate.

A battle of power will commence this weekend in Sin City, and I’m back to analyze this championship main event between Ortiz Jr. and Bohachuk to provide you with my best boxing picks.

Vergil Ortiz Jr.: Hands of Stone

It’s one thing to go undefeated in your first 21 professional boxing appearances, but to achieve undefeated status with a 100% knockout rate is truly something else. It’s the reason why many believe Vergil Ortiz Jr. could be the next big thing, and after brutalizing every opponent he’s faced to date, who are we to argue?

Of course, there’s always some food for thought. While Ortiz Jr. unquestionably enters the ring with hands of stone, what happens if the American meets an opponent that possesses the same devasting power? Does he have the technical attributes to win a 12-round contest should the opposition avoid his eye-watering power?

The majority of his career was spent at 147 pounds, and many critics questioned whether his power would transition to 154. Such questions were answered, and then some, as he now boasts two straight first-round KOs in the division. If anything, it could be argued that the easier weight cut makes him more frightening than ever, and the boxing odds seem to agree.

Serhii ‘El Flaco’ Bohachuk: Fists of Might

For as dangerous and formidable as Ortiz Jr. has been, Ukraine’s Serhii Bohachuk is no pushover. Not only will he enter Saturday’s highly anticipated clash with more experience and a higher level of opposition he’s defeated, but he’ll do so with a beautiful concoction of power and technical prowess.

There is a glaring result on El Flacos’ record in the shape of a knockout loss to Brandon Adams in 2021. However, this is only heightened due to Ortiz Jr.’s sparkling tenure. Overall, a 95% KO ratio alongside victories such as defeating Brian Mendoza, not forgetting a size advantage, make him Ortiz’s most challenging opponent to date.

Ortiz Is Here for “Greatness”

During a recent interview with boxing news outlet, BoxingScene, Ortiz Jr. let it be known that he’s here for greatness:

“To see that all the stuff we’ve been working on works is something special because it shows you I’m not doing all this for nothing, and I hope it proves to everyone that I belong at the top of this sport,” Ortiz said. “I’m here for greatness.”

Ortiz Jr. and Bohachuk: In the Tape Room

Ortiz Jr. gets all the flowers for his knockout power, and rightfully so. However, looking beyond his power, it’s important to credit the detailed work he’s achieved under the tutelage of Robert Garcia. The man who used to rely on his hands of stone is now better conditioned at 154lbs, lighter on his feet, and has seemingly been more precise than ever with his striking accuracy up a weight class.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ortiz favor his jab this weekend, especially as the Ukrainian thrives as a pressure fighter and will likely be open for this shot all night long. Capitalizing on such defensive frailties will be important for the American, although he’ll certainly want to avoid the heavy body shots of Bohachuk, which could test Ortiz’s cardio in the later rounds, having only fought for slightly over four minutes since 2022.

The one-punch knockout power of Bohachuk is undeniably one of his greatest assets, but watching him go the full twelve with Mendoza was proof that he’s capable of putting his aggression to the side when necessary, as he displayed an ability to break his opponent without falling back on the power in his possession.

With a high work rate and relentless pressure throughout his bouts, Bohachuk’s stamina and conditioning are among his best attributes. The level of competition he’s faced is certainly above the journeymen Ortiz Jr. has fought, but we must address the elephant in the room, and that’s his knockout loss to Adams.

Adams was able to capitalize on Bohachuk’s aggression. Versus an opponent that was comfortable fighting on the back foot, Bohachuk’s forward pressure cost him dearly, and it’s this type of hole, including the fact that the Ukrainian’s defenses drop following his jabs, that must be addressed before facing the hardest hitter he’s fought to date.

  • Ortiz Jr. has won all 21 of his pro bouts via KO/TKO
  • 23 of Bohachuk’s 24 career wins were by KO/TKO
  • Bohachuk’s lone career defeat was an eighth-round knockout

Ortiz Jr. vs Bohachuk Betting Pick

Low activity for Ortiz Jr. is my main concern regarding his potential for victory, but is Bohachuk really going to play the long game and accept twelve rounds as the non-aggressor? I can’t envision this happening, and I believe ‘El Flaco’ will understand that his best chance of neutralizing Ortiz Jr’s power will be to fight it in the aggressive style he’s known for.

Unfortunately for the interim champ, this will cost him and his chin the chance of survival. For the lack of elite-level experience and activity Ortiz presents, he certainly makes up for it in power. While we can suggest his 100% knockout rate won’t last forever, we shouldn’t expect it to end versus an opponent like Bohachuk, who presents multiple defensive lapses and is a man who’s been knocked out by a power puncher of lesser caliber previously.

It might feel and very well be the square play, but backing the Ortiz Jr. KO prop never feels wrong, and the boxing betting odds of -120 aren’t too shabby for a brute force that’s stopped all 21 of his opponents inside the distance.
