Canada vs. Germany at Laval
Jean Pascal, who was stripped of his WBA and WBC light heavyweight titles, continues his comeback against Michael Eifert on Thursday.
As boxing news reported, he failed multiple drug tests, so the 36-6-1 former champion needs to right his wrongs.
Boxing lines have Pascal favored to beat his lesser-known counterpart.
What to Make of Pascal?
Pascal defeated Badou Jack to keep his light heavyweight belts in 2019, but he has fought only once since.
Being stripped of your titles for drugs is shaming, but instead of retiring, the 40-year-old wants to show that he’s good enough to win top-class fights without the aid of drugs.
The Canadian, who is ranked sixth in the division, isn’t getting any younger, so a loss would spell the end of his career. However, he should be confident against 11-1 Eifert, who hasn’t faced nearly the same level of opposition as Pascal.
Pascal’s most recent losses came to Dmitry Bivol and Eleider Alvarez, so the form checks out, regardless of what was inside his body.
He vows to destroy Eifert as quickly as possible, which is reflected with boxing betting lines.
“It’s very important for me to give you guys a great show and, on Feb. 9, that’s exactly what I’m going to do,” Pascal said.
“Michael Eifert is a good, solid fighter and the final obstacle on my road back to the championship. I respect him like all my opponents, but it’s my intention to destroy him as quickly as possible. I don’t want to fight away from home again and taking care of business on February 9 is the best way to make sure I won’t have to.”
Eifert Facing Huge Test
If Eifert wins or goes the distance against Pascal, we would be shocked.
Take nothing away from the 25-year-old German, but with only four knockout wins from 12 fights, we can’t see him testing the former champion.
He is massively outclassed, as online gambling markets suggest. That could mean a quick night for Eifert, who comes off a unanimous decision win over Adriano Sperandio last year.
He hasn’t faced anyone of note, but good on him for taking this fight. It could propel him onto the world stage should he score the upset, which isn’t made easier by fighting on the road in Canada.
He’s ranked 39th in the division and he’s only the fifth-best light heavyweight in Germany, so Team Pascal has hand-picked one of the easier opponents.
We worry for Eifert in this situation, which could result in him being knocked out.
