Big Bets for Favorite
Most of the early money with boxing betting markets has been for Jesse Rodriguez, who looks to retain his WBC Super Flyweight title.
The unbeaten fighter has his eyes set on bigger fights, so it could be nothing more than a procession for the American.
Hype with Rodriguez
Rodriguez is a highly regarded boxer and that carries some pressure, but so far so good for the 22-year-old.
He handled the pressure well when defeating Wisaksil Wangek by eighth-round TKO in June, proving that he is capable of handling the spotlight and fighting in front of big crowds in Las Vegas.
Rodriguez, who is ranked as the fourth-best super flyweight in the world and first in the US, is expected to face tougher opponents throughout his career, hence the -2000 odds with the sportsbook.
He wants to be the main attraction and confidence is a good thing in boxing.
“I don’t feel pressure because I feel I was born for this,” Rodriguez told BoxingScene.com. “I belong on these big stages, it’s where I feel comfortable. Headlining in San Antonio, co-main to Canelo-GGG III, this is where I want to be, it’s been part of the plan and it’s great to see it play out“.
“There’s an expectation on me, all eyes are on me, I know that I need to perform at my best but that excites me. I’m right where I need to be, it’s just the beginning and the sky is the limit for me. I can’t tell you how far I can go because I don’t know how to stop.”
There isn’t much value in the -2000, but betting against Rodriguez could be difficult.
Gonzalez with Punchers Chance
Gonzalez has fought and won against strong opponents, but not with the hype of Rodriguez.
The +850 underdog is 28-4-1, so he has plenty of experience. However, with only 11 knockouts on his record, we don’t believe he has the strength to hit Rodriguez with a powerful blow.
He defeated Samuel Hernandez, who is 16-34-6, so his preparation for this fight hasn’t been against tough opponents. However, his victory over Sho Ishida was a surprise and a top effort.
It wasn’t an easy fight because he competed in Japan, but the judges handed him the split-decision victory. He gets a chance for the WBC title because of that victory, but there is little betting online support for the challenger.
Rodriguez isn’t underestimating Gonzalez, who earned respect earlier in his career.
“I would say ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez just because he’s been in there with everybody,” Rodriguez said. “He’s an all-time great so I feel like he would bring a better fight than Estrada “.
