Wilder’s Back! “Bronze Bomber” Aims to Reclaim KO King Status vs Zhang

“The Bronze Bomber” is back to reinstate his position as the most devasting power puncher on the planet following a disappointing loss to Joseph Parker and an unsuspecting outcome that saw Deontay Wilder go to the judge’s scorecards.

Forty-four of Wilder’s 47 pro career bouts have ended by KO/TKO, so to watch him do battle across all 12 rounds is a rarity. But now, it’s time to end this nonsense, and instead of attempting to outbox the opposition, he should headhunt like a man possessed and remind people why he has one of the most feared right hands on the planet.

Aged 41, “Bang Bang” Zhilei Zhang is still competing at the highest level, and I respect him because, as a +500 betting underdog, he was able to halt Joe Joyce in his tracks. He then returned for a rematch, replicated the first fight’s success, and became a surprising name thrown into the title mix.

However, much like his weekend opponent, Zhang couldn’t overcome the technical skills of Joseph Parker. It’s a stumbling block both men now have in common before they cross paths in Saudi Arabia, but more importantly, they’re also super familiar with knocking the crap out of their opponents.

Parlay Pick Leg 1: Total Alternative Under 9½ Rounds (-275)

The total for Wilder vs. Zhang was set at 6½ rounds, but I feel uneasy about this midway number because I envision this fight going either one of two ways: Either Zhang, like he often does, finds success early on and technically outclasses Wilder before landing the kill shot, or Wilder survives the early onslaught and takes advantage of a fatigued Zhang, who historically doesn’t perform well beyond the 6th and 7th rounds.

Whatever the weather, it’s difficult to envision these heavyweight brutes going the distance. Before their most recent clashes with Parker, they were auto-bets on the under. Zhang’s previous five pro wins ended before six rounds, and every victory Wilder’s had since 2015 was obtained via KO/TKO.

Under 9 ½ Rounds Supporting Trends:

Wilder has gone under 9 ½ rounds in eight of his previous 11 pro bouts

Zhang has seen under 9 ½ rounds in five of his previous eight pro bouts

Dubois & Hrgovic Set for Intriguing Heavyweight Bout

Despite the lack of amateur pedigree, Daniel Dubois is undoubtedly catching up with the rest of the heavyweight pack through the level of competition he’s faced of late. Yes, he lost to Joe Joyce and Oleksandr Usyk, but aged 26, this youngster is truly coming into his own and will arrive in Saudi Arabia with great confidence.

Croatia’s Filip Hrgovic recently met the toughest test of his career when matched against Zhilei Zhang two fights back. He took a unanimous decision on the scorecards, but many critics believe this result didn’t reflect the outcome.

Saturday’s clash is an intriguing fight, and I wouldn’t be opposed to backing the underdog, Dubois, as the current boxing betting lines don’t reflect his true chance of success. However, outside of the eventual winner, Hrgovic is massive and has shown a robust chin, while Dubois is also an absolute unit of a man and has survived early onslaughts from some of the world’s best, thus leading us to the over/under for our second parlay pick.

Parlay Pick Leg 2: Over 8½ Rounds (-115)

Critics continue to question Dubois’ heart and durability, but his age and experience during those knockout defeats to Joyce and Usyk aren’t being considered. You could say that he’s gone from a boy to a man, which is crazy when you look at his frame, but the experience he’s collected should be a factor this weekend, and all these signs, for me personally, point towards a drawn-out battle of skills.

Both men have the power to end this fight but equally present a level of durability that can certainly exceed the total, which has been set on the lower side at 8 ½ rounds.

Could a late stoppage surface? Yes, but for those initial nine rounds, I do expect both fighters to stick around and cash the over at BetUS sportsbook.

Over 8½ Rounds Supporting Trends:

  • Both of Dubois’ stoppage losses were in rounds nine and 10, respectively
  • Dubois most recent win was a round 10 KO/TKO
  • Hrgovic recently went the distance with a 40-year-old Zhilei Zhang
