Claressa “T-Rex” Shields: Maintaining GWOAT Status

When you’re the greatest woman of all time, G.W.O.A.T status isn’t enough. Claressa Shields woke up and said two Olympic gold medals, undisputed middleweight and undisputed junior middleweight, and unification at super middleweight don’t sit well. No, she needs to add a fourth title reign to an already dominant resume, and this weekend, she’ll attempt to conquer another weight class when stepping up to heavyweight.

Vanessa “Rampage” Lepage-Joanisse: First Title Defense

Canada’s Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse makes boxing news by returning to make her first WBC heavyweight title defense after snatching the gold from Abril Vidal earlier this year. With a small talent pool in the 175-pound women’s division, “Rampage” will be hopeful of making her name known.

Joanisse is ranked No. 1 on the limited roster at women’s heavyweight and was Shields’s obvious fight to make. And while you have to respect the undefeated queen of boxing for opting to compete against an opponent worthy of size and stature, we’ve seen Joanisse weigh in at 231lns in the past, and such a huge jump could present challenges she’s yet to face.

Shields v Joanisse: Sweet Science In-Ring Betting Analysis

As the natural heavyweight, Joanisse should have a power advantage. The problem is that despite being the naturally heavier woman, she’s still surrendering two inches in height, thus making it imperative to get on the inside and make her weight experience count.

It would serve well for Joanisse to bully Shields with weight in the clinch, put her against the ropes, and look to drain the gas tank of the Michigan native. The Canadian must make the three-division champ feel the power difference of heavyweight early, and she owns a sneaky, powerful right hook, which could pay dividends.

For Shields, the speed difference is going to be significant. Not to mention, from a technical standpoint, she’s untouchable in this bout. Behind her veteran savvy and know-how, while also knowing she holds the height advantage, popping the jab at range could be a simplistic yet smart approach to taking over.

A speedy jab from the outside wouldn’t be a new approach for Shields; her footwork and darting style have the potential to leave Joanisse dumbfounded, and when the Canadian is forced to be more aggressive, lacing some combinations when the time is right might make Shields-5000 moneyline price look like -10000.

  • Shields will make her heavyweight boxing debut
  • Joanisse is riding a 4-fight win streak
  • Shields is undefeated across three weight classes
  • Shields and Joanisse have 4 KOs (2 each) across a combined 22-fight pro career

Betting on Shields vs. Joanisse: Paying the Juice

I’d like to give Joanisse a chance and make bank on these huge underdog sportsbook odds, but Shields’ name is attached with so much juice for a reason.

T-Rex” has been competing at the highest level since 2017, as most of her pro tenure has involved championship bouts. In contrast, Joanisse’s eight-fight career has just two world title bouts, and she lost one of those via KO/TKO to her most notable challenge to date, Alejandra Jiminez.

Jiminez was Joanisse’s toughest fight to date until the Shields fight was scheduled, and it feels almost inevitable that the latter won’t encounter many difficulties in becoming a four-division world champion.

Shields has the height, speed, experience, and technical advantages. She might not be fully acquainted with heavyweight opponents, which could affect cardio and durability. Still, as Joanisse isn’t known to be a formidable power puncher, I expect a technical affair more than a slugfest, and this style of fight favors the undefeated boxing queen.

Are we paying -5000 on the moneyline boxing odds? Hell naw! However, stoppage victories have rarely surfaced for Sheilds, even in lower weight classes. Back “T-Rex” to win by decision, and although there’s still some chalk to deal with, -275 is significantly better priced and the most likely outcome.

My Best Bet:

Questions of the Day

Can Claressa Shields defeat Joanisse by KO?

Anything is possible when one of the greatest women’s boxers in history steps into the ring, but “T-Rex” isn’t known for her knockout power and is a technical strategist for most of her pro career. With a debut at heavyweight and a long list of wins by decision, expect the three-division champ to play the chess game and win on the scorecards.
