Smith at Astronomically-Low Odds
Dalton Smith is a -3000 favorite to keep his unbeaten record alive against Billy Allington, who is 10-1-4.
The British boxer has looked like a rising star in the super lightweight division and that’s reflected with boxing betting markets.
Prospect Keeping Mind on the Job
Smith is the British super-lightweight champion and he’s one of the brightest prospects in boxing.
He’s not letting his -3000 odds get the better of him against Allington, who is a chance of causing an upset on his best day.
“He’s an old dog, he’s game, I’ve seen a couple of his fights and he’s fit, strong and he keeps going,” Smith said. “He’s got a big heart, but I work hard in the gym because you can’t overlook anybody and I’m looking forward to a good fight, but I believe this will be a fight where I do it in style.”
He’s expected to fight for bigger titles later in the year. His most recent win was a unanimous decision victory against Kaisee Benjamin in November. It was a solid performance, although closer than expected. The judges had the score 116-113, 117-112, 115-114.
He has a good team around him and he’s looking forward to harder challenges.
“It is a confidence booster but sometimes it can go the other way,” Smith continued. “I’d like to think I’m a pretty grounded lad and I keep my feet on the ground. It is nice to have the eyes on me but I’ve got to keep proving what I’m all about.”
The sportsbook is likely to keep his odds around -3000, which is extremely short.
Allington Lacks Power
From his 10 professional wins, Allington has won them all by decision.
He has yet to have a win by knockout and that’s not something you see often. The 28-year-old also has four draws on his record, so there are some concerns about his quality.
The London-born fighter is ranked 21st in Britian, so he’s facing a huge rise in class after beating 11-4-2 Jamie Robinson and drawing with 10-12-3 Ben Fields in his last two fights.
There is a distinct lack of betting online support for the +1000 underdog, and despite Smith giving him some credit for his toughness, we think he’s just trying not to downplay his opponent too much.
In reality, Allington is severely outclassed by a better fighter who is heading places. We didn’t think Allington would ever be in a main-card fight, let alone fighting for the British super-lightweight title on Saturday.
