This Is How to Bet & Where to Watch Xander Zayas vs Patrick Teixeira

Xander Zayas, one of the hottest undefeated junior middleweight rising stars, will kick off the Puerto Rican Day parade by putting his skills to the test against his most formidable challenge to date.

Zayas squares off against a former world titleholder, Patrick Teixeira, in a 10-round clash inside The Theater at Madison Square Garden. The 21-year-old from Puerto Rico will attempt to secure his 19th victory as a professional nearly two decades after Top Rank Boxing began their traditional parade weekend celebrations.

Savvy Veteran or Past His Prime? Teixeira Aims to Prove Doubters Wrong

Patrick Teixeira has been a powerhouse in the junior middleweight division, and his 25 knockout wins from 34 successes are all that need to be mentioned in that regard. He shocked the world back in 2019 after taking the WBO strap from Carlos Adames as a significant underdog, but he experienced a fall from grace when he was then forced to continue fighting the best of the best at junior middleweight.

In a heated Brazil/Argentina rivalry, he lost the title to Brian Castano and then suffered two more defeats, albeit one of those two bouts came via disqualification. He has, however, bounced back into the win column how he knows best, with three consecutive KO/TKO victories ahead of his return to main event boxing this weekend.

Zayas: 16-Year-Old Prodigy Faces First Major Test

A 16-year-old Xander Zayas was scouted by Top Rank and debuted in the professional leagues just four years ago. After capturing regional championship success after a mere two years, the world-famed promoter knew they had a special talent on their hands, and he’s lived up to the hype ever since.

Zayas has already found success during the Puerto Rican Day Parade Top Rank event in 2023 by outclassing Ronald Cruz for eight rounds to further prove his position as a future star to keep an eye on.

With that said, Saturday’s main event position will be his first major headline position and the first time he competes versus a former world champion… It’s make or break for one of Puerto Rico’s finest young talents; the question is, does he truly have what it takes to overcome the challenges at this level of sport?

Zayas: “Representing Puerto Rico is a sacred commitment.”

When discussing the importance of this weekend’s main event bout, Zayas highlighted the significance of Puerto Rican pride:

Representing Puerto Rico on a date in which Boricua culture is celebrated and honored represents my sacred commitment to my people. On June 8, I won’t just be fighting for myself. I’ll fight for every Puerto Rican who perseveres when the going gets tough.”

Zayas vs. Teixeira: Styles Make Fights

Fourteen years of pro experience goes up against four years of experience this weekend, and this number shows you how Xander Zayas is one of the most promising youthful prospects at light middleweight.

Teixeira’s veteran mentality and experience will, however, be the youngster’s most difficult and challenging clash to date. But if you’re looking at reasons to fade the Brazilian, we must question how he’ll take the 154lb weight cut, something he hasn’t achieved since 2021, as he’s fought multiple catchweight and even middleweight contests since this date.

Positives for the underdog? Well, he’s a tall southpaw who uses his range well. The man doesn’t sail through fights, as he’s proven he can box and move. He also has sneaky power that’s seen him take out many opponents via KO/TKO over the years.

So, that leads us to the -1665 betting line on Zayas; where does this lopsided probability stem from? Sure, there is a little hype around his name, but his in-ring talents thus far have been noteworthy, as he unquestionably owns the skills to overcome a challenge such as Teixeira; he needs to put it all together on the night.

  • Teixeira has gone the distance in 3 of his 4 pro career losses
  • Zayas has gone the distance in 50% of his previous 6 pro bouts
  • Zayas is undefeated as a professional
  • Teixeira is former WBO World Junior Middleweight champion

Betting Prediction for Zayas vs Teixeira

As much as I don’t agree with the current pricing if Zayas comes out of the gate early, he will own a speed and counter-striking advantage that could certainly get him ahead on the scorecards. We’ve seen Teixeira over-commit too often, and it’s in those positions where Zayas’ speedy counters can make the difference.

With the Puerto Rican Day Parade in support, it’s difficult to overlook Zayas, and yes, he must deliver a career-best performance on Saturday. However, he has the skills, and with the pride of a nation on his shoulders, maintaining the impressive, unblemished win streak will have an added boost in his favor.

To find value in the sportsbook, I wouldn’t be surprised if this contest requires all ten rounds to determine a winner. Zayas has always been more of a chess player than a power puncher, and Teixeria’s 38-fight pro career has seen him lose just one fight via KO/TKO, which was all the way back in 2017.

Not to mention, ten-round bouts under the Top Rank banner often provide tightly fought decisions, so we shouldn’t be surprised when Zayas lives up to the hype and wins, but only through the avenue of the judges scoring system.
