Trevor Bryan faces his first defense of the WBA Heavyweight title at Ohio’s Packard Music Hall on Saturday against Jonathan Guidry.
The American won the title in January 2021, so he hasn’t fought for a year. However, challenger Guidry is the sizable underdog to snatch the title away.
Boxing odds have Bryan listed as the overwhelming favorite in the 12-round bout.
Trevor Bryan vs Jonathan Guidry
Champion Tearing Through Opposition
There hasn’t been much in the way of quality opposition for Trevor Bryan, but he has made them look second-rate.
The 32-year-old American has won his last four fights by TKO, including a victory over BJ Flores for the interim title before beating Bermane Stiverne for the WBA title.
He has dominated in all three two-star fights and that’s why the sportsbook has Bryan as the short favorite.
Fighting a relatively unknown fighter can go one of two ways, but Bryan won’t be taking the challenger lightly. Despite being 21-0 with 15 wins by knockout, the heavyweight division is packed with heavy hitters.
Bryan is one of them and he looks to have the class edge against Guidry, who should consider himself lucky to get the opportunity.
Guidry Quietly Confident
Being the despised underdog can have its benefits and for Guidry, he’s hoping the element of surprise will help.
The unheralded fighter is 17-0-2 in his own right, but his last two wins came against guys with a combined record of 28-28-3. It’s hardly an impressive lead-up to the biggest fight of his career.
Bryan isn’t a standout heavyweight, but he’s the WBA title holder and now Guidry gets his chance out of nowhere.
It wasn’t long ago that Guidry was without electricity and working as a commercial fisherman. Fast forward to 2022 and he’s getting a shot at the big time.
“I’ve seen what they’re saying, like ‘who is Jonathan Guidry?’ but it didn’t hit me yet, because we never really fought on that big stage. It’s kinda crazy. But it’s just how things work. We have nothing to lose. I have nothing to lose. I’m a nobody. But yesterday’s nobody is tomorrow’s somebody,” Guidry told BoxingScene.com.
The 32-year-old, nicknamed “The King,” is giving Bryan respect, but he would rather fight Bryan than the WBC and IBF champions.
“Trevor Bryan, he’s a real fighter, he’s the champion. I never got to fight no one on that level. But I’m glad we get a chance to. I don’t think Trevor Bryan is a top-five or number one heavyweight. He’s not Tyson Fury. He’s good, but he’s not one of those elite fighters. I have a better chance of fighting him than one of those other guys,” he said.
Betting online markets aren’t giving Guidry much of a chance. We’re not either, but the big-bodied fighters can always land a knockout punch without much fuss.
Bettors to Cash with Bryan
There is a reason why Trevor Bryan is -2500 to retain his belt. We can’t see the champion being worried about Jonathan Guidry and the fight could be over quickly.
Bryan has fought on the big stage before, so the experience could be too much for Guidry to overcome.
Bettors won’t get rich backing Bryan, but you can’t go against him in your boxing betting selections.
