Zepeda vs Hughes: Boxing Odds and Betting Preview

William Zepeda and Maxi Hughes engage in a 12-round lightweight match at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas on Saturday, March 16.

While Zepeda (29-0, 25 KO) is the heavy favorite, veteran Hughes (26-6-2, 5 KO) has been on a roll for the last three years and, according to some, should have been awarded a victory against George Kambosos Jr last time out.

Zepeda vs Hughes: Fighter Previews

William “Camaron” Zepeda

Regarding the 135-pound class, outside of “Tank” Davis, Zepeda is generally considered the most dangerous power puncher in the division. The Mexican superstar beat out WBC challenger Mercito Gesta (KO6) and Jaime Arboleda (KO2) last year to cement his position as the top contender in the division.

Maxi “Maximus” Hughes

Hughes is an excellent ring general, even if his professional record is somewhat limited. In July, after what seemed to be an easy outboxing of Australian George Kambosos, the former British champion lost by a controversial 12-round split decision but ultimately earned the respect of fans and critics alike.

Zepeda vs Hughes: Main Event Breakdown & Analysis

The Las Vegas boxing odds of -1665 on Zepeda are a huge giveaway, and unfortunately for Hughes, all of the chips and then some are stacked against him this weekend.

Stylistically, Hughes is completely outmatched at 135 pounds against Zepeda. However, JoJo Diaz has already shown a dialed-in opponent can take Zepeda to the final bell, and Hughes is seasoned and knowledgeable enough to replicate similar success. The same factors that make Hughes’s chances of winning slim also give him a good shot at making it further in this bout than anticipated.

Hughes won’t attempt to stand and bang with Zepeda, that’s for certain, so boxing betting fans shouldn’t expect this bout to be as exciting as Zepeda vs Alvarado. It won’t end as quickly as Mercito Gesta and Jaime Arboleda, as the Englishman will be light enough and defensively sound, at least in the early goings.

Zepeda vs Hughes Best Bet: Over 7½ Rounds (-152)

Hughes might start out well, but it’s hard to see him going the distance against Zepeda’s aggressive approach. Despite his defensive prowess, the 34-year-old Yorkshireman isn’t exactly a cloak-and-dagger in the ring.

Hughes will become tired from consistently being on the defensive, which is when Zepeda will start to exert pressure. The more blows Hughes takes, the slower he’ll become, and eventually, the KO/TKO moment will surface.

That said, Hughes’s durability can undoubtedly keep him in this fight beyond the current total of 7½ rounds at our sportsbook. With limited betting value on Zepeda, we can back him over and hope the Brit can at least survive long enough to help us cash.

  • Zepeda has won 25 of his 29 pro bouts via KO/TKO
  • Hughes has never lost via KO/TKO

Zepeda vs Hughes Prediction: The Crystal Ball Picks

In this main event lightweight bout, a quick rub of my crystal ball reveals that Hughes will put on a great showing early on, but eventually, the incoming bombs from Zepeda will cause a late stoppage in round nine.
