Winner Advances to Play TCU
Unfamiliar teams will meet in the First Four Rounds of the NCAA Tournament when the Arizona State Sun Devils and Nevada Wolf Pack go head-to-head.
After differing showings in their respective conference tournaments, the Sun Devils and Wolf Pack will clash for a chance to advance and meet TCU in the first round of the tournament.
Arizona State made it to the Pac-12 Tournament semifinals, falling to Arizona, while Nevada dropped its first game in the Mountain West Tournament to San Jose State.
Both teams finished in the middle of their respective conferences, with the Sun Devils placing fifth in the Pac-12 with an 11-9 record and the Wolf Pack recording a 12-6 conference record to finish fourth.
According to college basketball lines, Arizona State is a 2½-point favorite in the game.
Arizona State’s Offense Stalls
The Sun Devils have one of the best offenses in the Pac-12, but it was limited in their semifinal game against Arizona.
Arizona State’s scoring is one of the best in the conference, averaging 70.3 points for fifth in the Pac-12. However, its shooting is one of the worst. The Sun Devils’ 41.3% shooting percentage is 10th in the conference, and their poor shooting was one of the things that sunk them against Arizona.
The Sun Devils scored 59 points against the Wildcats, shooting 32.3% from the field and 23.1% from three. Only two of Arizona State’s players reached double figures, though neither scored over 11.
Arizona State’s shooting wasn’t great in its quarterfinal to win over USC either, as it shot 39%. However, the Sun Devils shot 43.8% from three while two of their top leading scorers, Desmond Cambridge and DJ Horne, had strong games.

The Sun Devils will need to connect on more of their shots if they want to make it past the play-in.
According to college basketball odds, Arizona State has +25000 odds to win March Madness.
Nevada’s Defense Fails
The Wolf Pack have one of the best defenses in the Mountain West, and just as Arizona State’s offense failed to show up in its semifinal game, Nevada’s defense was a no-show in its tournament game.
Nevada’s scoring and field goal percentage allowed are both at the top of the conference, with its 66.9 points allowed ranking fifth and 41.9% shooting percentage third. However, the Wolf Pack’s defense didn’t appear to bother San Jose State in Nevada’s quarterfinal loss.
The Spartans finished with 81 points on 49.2% shooting against Nevada. The Wolf Pack allowed San Jose State’s leading scorer, Omari Moore, to go for 26 points and Sage Tolbert to reach 20.
Nevada’s defense had a better showing in its final regular-season game, a two-point loss to UNLV. Though the Rebels had four players reach double figures, only one scored over 15 while UNLV was also held to 36.1% shooting.
A return to the Wolf Pack’s strong defensive play will be needed to get by Arizona State.
According to NCAA basketball odds, Nevada has +50000 odds to win the NCAA Tournament.
