Creighton vs Tennessee March Madness ATS Picks in Sweet 16

High seeds will match up in the Sweet 16 when the No. 3-seeded Creighton Bluejays and No. 2 Tennessee Volunteers battle on Friday. After both teams overcame late-game scares in the round of 32 to advance, they’ll be playing for a chance to now move onto the Elite Eight. The Bluejays downed Oregon in the second round in a double-overtime game while Tennessee fought off Texas to survive. The matchup between these two should be another close one, and while NCAA basketball odds has the Vols as a slight favorite, Creighton should be able to cover the spread.

Tennessee vs Creighton Odds and Spreads

  • Bluejays are 7-0 ATS in their last 7 neutral site games as an underdog.
  • Volunteers are 2-12-2 ATS in their last 16 NCAA Tournament games as a favorite of 0.5-6.5.
  • Volunteers are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 neutral site games.
  • Bluejays are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games as an underdog.
  • Volunteers are 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 NCAA Tournament games as an underdog.

  • Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes is 4-16 ATS in the NCAA Tournament since 2009.

ATS Pick: Creighton +2 ½

Despite the short line, the Bluejays should be able to cover and keep things tight with the Volunteers until the end.

Creighton is one of the stronger offensive teams, ranking 31st with an average of 80.6 points, while four of their top six players average double digits as well. Not only can the Bluejays get scoring from nearly anyone on the floor, but they are an efficient team as well, ranking 20th in the nation while shooting it at a 48.5% clip. However, a solid portion of their shots come from beyond the arc, of which Creighton connects at a 36.6% rate.

Though the Bluejays are efficient, the Volunteers also have one of the best scorers in the tournament in Dalton Knecht. After failing to stop Jermaine Couisnard (32 points) in the second round, Knecht should have a more efficient night against the Bluejays. Tennessee’s strong defense will also be imperative. The Vols have the third-ranked adjusted defense and held Texas to 58 points on 36.4% shooting in the round of 32. They defend well against the three as well, limiting teams to 30.9%.

Knecht’s play and Tennessee’s defense should ultimately help it get the win, but Creighton’s experience and offense from multiple players will help it keep it closer.

Player Prop Pick: Dalton Knecht Over 21.5 Points (-122)

Knecht leads the Volunteers at 21.1 points a game and he will be looked to once again to lead them to victory in the Sweet 16. Though Knecht had a quieter shooting night in the second round, going just 5 of 18 from the field, he still finished with 18 points after opening the tournament with a 23-point performance.

Knecht should be able to bounce back against a Creighton team that struggled to stop Couisnard in its previous game. He has scored at least 21 points in three of his last five games. With a trip to the Elite Eight on the line, expect the national Player of the Year finalist to step up once again.
