Marquette Spread Pick vs Providence in Big East Semis

One team is preparing for a run at the March Madness championship and the other is just trying to get a chance to dance as the favored Marquette Golden Eagles take on the surprising Providence Friars in the Big East tournament semifinals on Friday night.

Marquette, the third seed, held off Villanova 71-65 in overtime on Thursday to reach the semifinals without point guard Tyler Kolek. The senior floor general, who is averaging 15 points and 7.6 assists, has an oblique injury and is questionable.

The Golden Eagles thought they had won at the end of regulation in the quarterfinals, but Kam Jones’ runner was deemed a fraction late after video review. Marquette split with the Friars in the regular season as both teams won on their home court.

Seventh seed Providence is squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble, but gave itself a chance with an inspiring 78-73 win over sixth-ranked Creighton on Thursday. The Friars only turned the ball over five times and held Creighton to 37.9 percent shooting in the win.

The Golden Eagles are +500 to make the NCAA Final Four in the Las Vegas odds and Providence is +7000.

Providence vs Marquette Over/Under Pick: Over 137 ½

Kolek, who has been out since Feb. 28 versus Providence, would make a difference but we think the number is still a little low.

Providence vs Marquette Pick ATS: Marquette -4½

The Golden Eagles should be pumped up after making the biggest plays against Villanova and getting contributions from a number of players. Providence has fought valiantly, but will be playing its third game in three days.

The Friars will leave it all out on the floor, but will need huge efforts from Devin Carter, Josh Oduro and several others. Even without Kolek, Marquette placed four players in double figures scoring against Villanova and Oso Ighodaro (14.0 per game) was not one of them.

Providence vs Marquette Moneyline Pick: Marquette (-195)

If Kolek can come back, Marquette will be among some March Madness expert picks to reach the Final Four if it gets a favorable bracket. The Friars probably need a win to have any chance of getting into the NCAA Tournament.
