Miami Stuns No. 1

Villanova Keeps Rolling

Teams who earned their way into the Sweet 16 in different ways will meet when the Miami Hurricanes clash with the Villanova Wildcats on Friday.

The Hurricanes downed No. 1 seed Indiana to secure their spot in the Sweet 16, their first appearance since 1992. The Hoosiers were the second No. 1 to drop in the second round after Stanford lost the previous day, making it the first time two No. 1 seeds haven’t reached the Sweet 16 in 25 years.

The Wildcats eased past their opponent for the second straight game, defeating Florida Gulf Coast by double digits to reach the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2003.

Neither team has had much experience in making a postseason run recently, but only one team will continue that run past Friday. Women’s College Basketball lines have Villanova as a 3.5-point favorite in the matchup.

Miami’s Defense Pulls Through

Although Indiana remained on Miami’s tail the whole game, the Hoosiers were never able to take the lead due to the Hurricanes’ defense.

The Hurricanes had a strong shooting day, especially from beyond the arc shooting 57.1%, but it was their defense that was crucial down the stretch.

Indiana is second in the nation in field-goal percentage and sixth in points, averaging 81.5 points on 49.8% shooting, but against Miami, the Hoosiers finished with one of their lowest point totals of the season. Indiana shot 41% to score 68 points in the loss.

Miami also held two of Indiana’s top 3-point shooters to a combined eight points, with Sydney Parrish and Sara Scalia going 0-for-5 from beyond the arc.

The Hurricanes’ defense will be needed once again against a strong Villanova offense.

Villanova’s Offense Turns It On

Villanova coasted past Florida Gulf Coast after a big third quarter from its offense.

The Wildcats were up six at the half. After shooting 62.5% in the third quarter, Villanova was able to take a meaningful lead with one to go.

Maddy Siegrist, the nation’s leading scorer, had 31 points, breaking the record for longest streak of games with 20+ points with 36 straight games. Siegrist also added six rebounds, four steals and four blocks in the win.

Lucy Olsen was also huge in the win, pouring in 23 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.

Siegrist and Olsen will continue to be a strong one-two punch to help propel the Wildcats to victory.

According to Women’s College Basketball lines, Villanova has +3900 odds to win March Madness.

Miami vs Villanova Picks and Prediction

Friday’s meeting with Miami will be the first time in the tournament that Villanova will be getting a test, while the Hurricanes are coming off a big win over No. 1 Indiana.

Miami took down a No. 1 seed by way of solid defense and strong 3-point shooting. However, the ‘Canes won’t be able to get that against the Wildcats, who boast a strong defense of their own, holding opponents to 33.7% from beyond the arc. Villanova also has one of the best players in the nation in Siegrist. The Wildcats are getting a test, but they should be able to come away victorious.

The Villanova Wildcats are listed at -175 in our Vegas NCAA Women’s basketball lines. This means that if you wager $100 on the Wildcats, you have a chance to win $57. The Miami Hurricanes are +135, offering a chance to win $135 on a $100 wager.

The implied probability attached to the betting lines gives the Villanova Wildcats a 63.64% chance to win, with the Miami Hurricanes at 42.55%.
